Rebecca: Everyone loves a skin care line that leaves you feeling like you’re at the spa; hi, I’m Rebecca Briton and welcome to watchmojo.com, and today we’re looking at a line that’ll leave you smelling yummy and feeling great because it’s eco-friendly.
Your products are all-natural from the production stage to the packaging, can you tell us about them all?
Carolyn Wyse: It is very difficult and it does take a lot of research, and so a lot of it involves calling different suppliers and finding out what their specialty is. And a lot of people will tell you right off the bag or say that it comes straight from Africa, it’s unrefined, our coco butter comes from Africa; do your research on the ingredients and figure out what works with what and do your best.
Rebecca: And where did you get all the recipes for your products?
Carolyn Wyse: I started out using just library books and basic soap making manuals, but it’s a lot like cooking, you can tweak your ingredients, tweak your percentages
Rebecca: And what kind of ingredients do you use?
Carolyn Wyse: I do try to make everything so that it’s suitable for sensitive skin, and I also make everything so that it won’t dry out your skin, no matter what the type.
For the soap, the main ingredients are olive oil and coconut oil and shea butter; for the body butters its shea butter, coconut oil and vitamin E. This is the Plum Blossom in Silk, silk, and it’s really nice if you have really rough skin. The silk in it actually does smooth out the surface of your skin. The Avocado and Aloe soap is really, really nice for people who have very dry skin, very sensitive skin and especially eczema, it’s made with a full leader of Aloe Vera juice and whole lot of fresh avocados also. The Satsuma guava soap is excellent for people with oily skin, the bits is in there that are slightly pink and slightly green, are separate batches of soap that I’ve made with French Pink clay and French Green clay, so those dry out the extra oils from your skin; and Satsuma’s a citrus fruit that tones your skin also. The Patchouli in hand soap is really, really nice for people who have combination skin; the Patchouli oil kind of regulates that and evens out your skin tone. The Lavender soap is great for people who are really stressed out and just need to relax. It’s really nice for people with depression or anxiety or anything else when they just need to calm down a little bit.
Rebecca: What are the challenges that you have to deal with when producing eco-friendly products?
Carolyn Wyse: Right now I don’t make any creams that have water in them because I haven’t found the preservative that is as effective as power beans against bacteria and as soon as you combine oil with water, it’s like a salad dressing; it’s going to go bad.
Rebecca: And when did you first decide to start producing all-natural products?
Carolyn Wyse: There were kind of 2 factors that came into play at the same time; the first was that I’d always love hand-made soaps in nice fragrances but I had terrible eczema, so I could never use them; and the second factor was that at the time I was working as a stain glass artist, and it was starting to bother me that the only people who could afford my pieces were people in the upper echelon, income wise, and I really wanted to try to make art in some form or another that everybody can afford.
Rebecca: Thank you very much
Carolyn Wyse: You’re welcome
