I’ve always been into fashion actually even going back with my old books and things. I see little doodles and of the girls wearing some big flocks and things that I was kind of being into that. But at college, I actually studied illustration I was into art in general. And I really did want to go into illustration but then they decided that there wasn’t any space on the course. So, I ended up going into the fashion course, and then once I got sucked into that you know that was it. And I was at a very, very good college. I had to be very disciplined. They watched you very hard and stood me in good integrity to get into the room of College of Art.
Dave and I we just always excited when we graduated that we would start our pairing business and we were very fortunate because my family really helped us and unpacked a little business. And I remember we were looking for location. We would drive in down Brook Street and noticed to let sign up on this funny little building by Haunch Venison yard and we went and had a look and it used to belong to Freddie Folks, the millionaire. He did the Queen’s house and we discovered that it was something in the price bracket we could afford. And so we ended up there and that it was just sold for tooters really for not many almost, it was kind of a row we have a lot of luck you know being in the right place at the right time.
Bianca—she was one of our first clients who wore one of the perfect gowns for the college collection at Studio 54 for her birthday which was great. It was an actually that’s what started—because it was pictures of her and the white horse wearing this frothy chiffon silk—when all of the world and people started flooding in from that point of time.
We do have a very, very good relationship with Vogue and they introduced us one by one to the Royal family. But one day we were approached by—and they were doing a peak shoot with somebody and they wouldn’t tell us who it was. They just say it’s very famous we can’t say the name. We’re looking for something very elegant, very feminine with the high neck, do you have anything? As it happened we did, we have this little blouse hanging which we just made. Sent it down there and didn’t hear anymore but then found out that was the blouse used for the engagement photograph by—Madonna. When we got the commissioner actually it was at a very strange situation because I was doing it and fitting it at the time with this client and the phone kept ringing and nobody was picking up the phone and I was getting a little bit annoyed because I didn’t want to answer because I was right at the middle of complicated pinning and everything.
And finally, I picked up the phone and it was Diana and she just said, “Would you do me Diona of making my wedding dress.” And it was as if time stood still that you know one of this life changing moments and then she repeated it and almost as if she was expecting me to say, well, I’d better check the diary or you know I’m not sure if we can fit you in. It was just unbelievable and of course I was just so excited that I couldn’t let the client know what was happening and I made some ridiculous excuse about my brother’s just had a baby run out the room and she must have had all these stumping, jumping down on the ceiling because I run upstairs told David and the girls and we just you know it was just an incredible moment.
