English Idioms - To 'Get At' Something

Hi, my name is Fred also known as English teacher Fred. I have with me a deck of Idioms. Each card has one idiom on it and I will just pick one and we will talk about it see what does it mean. How about this one, what does it say.

“To get at something”, to get at something, to get at something most common way that this idiom is used I think if somebody is talking to you and they are talking but you don’t really understand what they mean and you don’t really understand what is the point of what they are saying. What is the reason that they are talking to you and you’ll say what are you getting at? Come on what are you getting at and what do your really mean so to get at something is meaning something.

What are you getting at my friend was talking to me and I couldn’t tell what is getting at come on what are you getting at tell me in plain English and just plain speaking don’t try to talk and make it confusing. Just say it clearly, what are you getting at. I don’t understand what are you trying to say.
