Clive Pearson: Gretchen Gobin, a lovely art homeowner and ceramics teacher is ready for a change. She loves her DC townhouse but wants to leave it behind in hopes of planning a free standing home in the same area. What does the townhouse have to offer? Shane Tallant is on his way to find out.
Shane Tallant: Alright Gretchen, a real estate expert Shirley here.
Gretchen Gobin: Okay.
Shane Tallant: Alright.
Gretchen Gobin: Yeah.
Shane Tallant: Be prepared because she might throw some comments around.
Shirley: Shane don't take another step.
Shane Tallant: I had a feeling you were going to say that.
Shirley: Are we trying to detract buyers right from the get go?
Gretchen Gobin: Oh my goodness.
Shirley: The red and white, you can see it right away. Here's what happens when you have such dominant colors, everything else fades to gray.
Taniya Nayak: Gretchen this is your curb appeal. It is the first place that everyone's going to see when they walk into this house. This door right now is getting lost with the brick. We want to paint it and make it stand out. I notice that you have these railings that look just a wee bit worn out. Let's give it a nice casing, a nice elegant feel, and we have a little shrubbery issue here.
Gretchen Gobin: Yeah. They are looking a little worn and tired.
Taniya Nayak: The shrubs are short.
Shane Tallant: First off, it takes a crane to deliver enough concrete for Gretchen's new side walk.
Taniya Nayak: 1500 pounds.
Shane Tallant: We have about a $150 worth of tools here. About a $150 worth of rent equipments, so 300 bucks is not bad. What are you doing on here Simon?
Simon Ley: I am going to trim this out. Without this trim here, this looks unfinished; it doesn't look sturdy even though it is. So that is going to be a problem for potential buyers, we will cover this up.
Shane Tallant: What is it going to cost to do the whole project?
Simon Ley: $30. Beautiful!
Shane Tallant: We're going to have a new sidewalk in no time.
Simon Ley: Here we go. This is a first pool.
Clive Pearson: The trick with concrete, you have to pour it all at once and getting through 1600 pounds is a big chore. The lower porch goes gray, plants go in.
Taniya Nayak: Can you dig it?
Clive Pearson: Then Simon finishes off the sidewalk. Last close to the roof, paint highlights the home's architectural detail.
Taniya Nayak: We're almost there. We're taking this house to new heights.
Clive Pearson: The red steps worked, but the crack didn't help a buyer's approach. Now everything about Gretchen's house says come on in.
Taniya Nayak: We added some red mountain and plants along the sidewalk later to really bring buyer the front door. We even added a new concrete which is an interesting task in itself. We added some railings, we've painted the existing railings to give everything a nice cohesive look and then we added the white to the door to make this wrought iron stand out. No one is going to miss this house.
