Ernie Hawkins Teaches Darktown Strutters Ball Part 2/2
He’s going to change chords to A D7 chord which we've seen before so that he can walk up to a G. So, it's kind of almost like a transition chord that D7 chord.
[Demonstration]
When he gets down to the C note, its D7 chord and then it just naturally just falls right into this G7. And this is Gary Davis G7 with his thumb, his middle finger, his third finger on the 7th. So, it's—
[Demonstration]
He starts to the low bass, pinches two Gs up to the D with a low bass. This point from hereon, it's a little bit tricky because it's something just peculiar to Davis and the way he plays this song.
[Demonstration]
When he finishes that phrase, he hits that low G note. That’s the first note of the run that’s going to follow up to next. So it goes G7—
[Demonstration]
So, this run, it's a little bit tough because of the timing. You have to start it this way. So, you're in G. That’s the first note of the run. So, you play the first three frets, open in the first three frets of the A string and then C.
[Demonstration]
So, the run feels like it's starts to your right on this A note and it does. So, it's just the first three notes on the A string with the open and then the first four notes with the open string on the D string. So, it's thumb with your fix. Start that run with your fingers and then it goes open G string second fret, third fret and then third fret, second fret of your fourth string back down to C, walks up to an F and then to a D flat. So, you’ve got a couple of cantankerous fingerings here.
[Demonstration]
You walk up to this F note. You do the thumb roll and then you walk back down to this D flat and you just again do the thumb roll. So, walk up to the F and then it starts over. It goes to D7, G7 then it walks up to C. It does a little trill, just walks up that E string to C with a high G note and does a little trill with this little finger, first fingers on that F note, F-G-F-C and then walks up at the C-D-E right up to the F chord into the D minor. It walks C-D-E-F, open E and a slide and then hits the open A bass which is a kind of a pickup note, a passage into the fourth chord which is the B flat.
[Demonstration]
Now this is a hard chord for a lot of students. It's really a hard chord for anybody to make. What I do is instead of just flattening it out this whole chord to making it like a major. I just kind of to make it easy for myself and lift up this finger, so I don’t really worry too much about this note because the one is here. And so, I can get pretty much that whole chord in there. So, it's—Backs to C
[Demonstration]
That’s basically it. I’d like to just go over that last part one more time. So, the second time through of this song just to make sure that we got it here, it starts over in the F, D7,
G7, it’s just the same as the beginning. It walks us to C and a G note in the C and then walks up to F to this D minor. Hits the open A bass, so it's—
[Demonstration]
So it's that A bass and then you're going to be sliding into this B flat chord, so you just hit it a fret down so that you hit the bass and the D note on the second string. So, it's low bass. We’re using three basses there. It slides up to the A, back down to C and then back up to the F. And a little bugle call, fifth frets, eighth fret back to the fifth fret, sixth, once again out of this F position, seems devil’s dream. It goes down to the D note.
[Demonstration]
And there you have it, Darktown Strutters Ball. We’re going to slow it down and play it on the split screen now for you.
