Nick: Almost every time you get a new phone you get a new charger which means you have probably have a pile that looks like this somewhere. The European commission has asked the industry to solve that problem without having to legislate it and on Monday 10 mobile phone manufacturers committed to provide chargers compatible on the basis on the micro USB connector.
Gunter: The ten major manufacturers, who have some 90% of the market, have entered into this Memorandum of Understanding and have signed it. From next year, the mobile phones will be on the market all mutually compatible. And in the future, any phone will be chargeable by any charger.
Nick: If all goes as planned that means it would be easier for consumers to charge their phones and discarded chargers would create less electronic waste. The Commission’s said that it was pleased with the solution was found on the basis of self regulation.
Bridget: We have seen with the GSM standard, the tremendous success of Europe leading the world in mobile phone technology and we are optimistic that this standard could be adapted in other geographies. So that is something we working for in the adoption thereof. With respect to the number of operators that the number of manufacturers who signed up to the MOU, this is a voluntary agreement that has been signed by 10 companies and all those ten companies are committed to advance the activity forward.
Nick: The companies that signed the agreement include Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, CallCom, RIM, and Samsung, Sony Ericson, and Texas Instruments. The Universal chargers should be available in the EU from 2010. Reporting from Boston, I’m Nick Barber, IDG News Service.
