Evolution E-mail Client Review
Hey, Bruce Naylor Frugal attacks here. I'm using Ubuntu 9.0.4 on a compact NCC 6220 laptop and I'm using it in my small business right now to see how you can really work with this day in and day out for business purposes. Now, Linux is definitely very, very popular up there now especially to bad economy people tiered to things like the constant upgrade cycles that they put up with Microsoft and Apple. I don’t understand all that I get.
But can you really use Ubuntu in your business and so I've installed some applications and I've kind of play with some stuff that came with Ubuntu 9.0.4 including the Evolution email client—oh, this is from Novel and currently version is 2.26.1. Now I have an exchange server here on my office here so I've configured this to work with exchange. I have to tell its all and all a pretty impressive application to use, I definitely sink my email, my contacts and my calendar with the exchange server, that seems to be working okay unless for some reasons I suspend my laptop in forever reason Evolution does not like that what so ever I have to actually reboot the laptop in order to reconnect to the exchange server.
But that being said the only features that I can't seem to get to work on it right now is they call it Memos and Evolution which is the equivalent the Outlook Notes. Also I notice some difficulty with task, now all the tasks show up for some reasons. Sometimes mysteriously they don’t show up at all after a closing or restarting Evolution then they do, so I don’t know maybe there's a little bit of flaking this with that feature of it.
Also I can't get to the exchange public folders in this as of yet. Now maybe there is a setting somewhere in the software I've missed but so far I've not been able to locate that. That’s kind of some of this skinny on the Evolution product but I like of those an email client seems to work quite nicely does a good job in keeping the email organized and easy to read, easy to use as very much like Outlook in the way of functions of even the way of looks you have the three pane of view on your and I like that. And so right now I'm just kind of learning my way around it but it is certainly I think a pretty decent Outlook alternative but there is some general flakiness in the software especially keeping its connection with your exchange server active. But other than that it certainly didn’t cost and it came with the Ubuntu and I like that very much.
There is a level of integration with Evolution with the open up of suit of applications as using the contact this is the data source. Now this is something that was interesting the contacts on my exchange server are null available to me in the open office word processor as a data source. Now the local contact in Evolution are, so they're again there is some anomalies there in trying to integrate this as well as you’d want to in exchange environment.
But you can't beat the price on so far it seems to be working pretty well. Actually I think the mail note applications and the reminders in my opinion I kind of like Evolutional but better than Outlook. So I can't complaint about that it is s robust system is a pin, a personal information manager. I think it’s right on the power with Outlook in a lot of ways—did you get what you pay for, right? And not necessarily, not in this case I think Evolution is really, really good it’s probably going to get a whole lot better if more and more organizations begin to explore using operating systems like in Ubuntu and other links distributions like Evolution is a variable alternative to Outlook.
Try it out for yourself, you know, use virtue box and shop virtual machine, install Ubuntu that way, there's also Wubi, never had a lot of lack with Wubi. There always one thing and another always happens either craft spell on download or I don’t know I just never had a lot of luck with Wubi with myself but try now its Evolution 2.2.6.1 from Novel is an Outlook alternative I think its pretty good. There is some general flakiness when working with exchange, but iMap and it works brilliantly with Evolution.
So the excellent email client probably all you would ever be either hope to have. I'm Bruce Naylor check it out. Make sure to visit us at www.frugalbrothers.com. Listen and remember for senior shot now, making you money or save your money go there get out of there. I'll talk to you later. Bye.
