Exercising Your Brain Against Alzheimer's Disease

Elizabeth: My name is Elizabeth, I live in Walden, Vermont. I’m 55 years old. Is there a research to support the idea that brain exercises do in fact delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Stuart Zola: Elizabeth, it does seem to be the case that the more we can exercise our brain, the more we are able to sustain or cognitive abilities for longer periods of time. The evidence for that is still out. That is it does seem to be the case of doing crossword puzzles and other kinds of things may be helpful.

One of the clearest pieces of evidence however that we do have is exercise in the real sense and that is doing walking. Other kinds of exercise programs actually is the thing that is now most correlated with sustaining our cognitive abilities over longer periods of time. You don’t have to run a marathon. You just have to have a regular and routine exercise program to help you maintain your health and help you maintain your cognitive abilites.
