Hi! This is Stacy Rapacon of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in Charlottesville, Virginia ranks number four among our Best Cities for 2009. Here I am at the City’s top tourist stop Monticello the idyllic Hilltop Home of our third President Thomas Jefferson.
Justice Jefferson was a Renaissance man. Charlottesville is a city of many talents. You can find employers here from a variety of industries including aerospace and defenses Nothrop Grumman, research firm, SNL financial, indoor biotechnologies and the US Government.
It’s this variety that helps to land Charlottesville on our list. Jefferson’s fathered Charlottesville main attraction and biggest employer, the University of Virginia. Today, it’s the City’s intellectual home base employing a corner of the local workforce in its academic, medical and research facilities. Follow signs bearing silhouettes of Jefferson and the two other Presidents who call Charlottesville home, James Madison and James Monroe to historic downtown.
During summers, free Fridays after five concerts, the Pavilion’s live music energizes the Pedestrian Mall and drums up business for the unique shops and restaurants lining the freshly, refurbished bricks. One neat shop is the Dog and Horse Lovers boutique with canine CEO Mr. Heagles. Owner share in nickels pick civil for her dream stores since it’s a city surrounded by horse country.
For the art scene, cruise the many galleries any time. And on the first Friday of every month, enjoy free drinks and snacks while admiring the exhibits but get there early, the free wine goes fast. Speaking of wine, try a tour or tasting at any of the 21 Year By wineries. What better way to cap up your work week or your weekend visit to beautiful Charlottesville.
