In the USA, the off road Rally Club extends to Rock Crawlers who
use 4X4 vehicles that have been upgraded to handle the huge
boulders of the three peaks region of Utah with monstrous tires and
huge ground clearance. Competitors have to negotiate a seemingly
impossible course and not always successful with the few taking
spectacular tumbles of the track.
The snow cap peak of Mount Kenya, 19,000 feet above sea level is
the backdrop to an annual event that’s more than just a car show.
This is the Rhino Charge, an off-road challenge course. Pitting
man on machine against nature with one objective, racing money
for the endangered black rhino. For years, the black rhino has been
the top of the list of the world’s most endangered species. At one
time even threatened with the extinction by poachers and uncaring
governments, but thanks to the Rhino Ark, a group of volunteers
who made it their personal mission to ensure the survival of the
species, the animal is no longer on that list.
Rhino Ark has organized a weekend off-road car race to test the
strength and endurance of man and machine. Off to more than 10
years of annual events, the organization has raised over $1M and
the rhino is now able to roam freely in the Aberdare National Park
in Central Kenya. The park provided 80% of water to Nairobi but
it was under threat from poachers and illegal loggers. There were
also retaliatory attacks against wildlife by humans, the crops

injured and have to be evacuated.
Rob Poter: A rock fell on top of my foot. And I had a crack. And I think it’s
my tousle burn on the top that’s got. And then it was what how
many kilometers we do after that? Four or five and then
mechanical failure and then that was it, end of judge for us.
Male: The rugged terrain often seems impossible but these drivers
manage to maneuver over and threw it.
Karen Matthews: We’ve changed wheels. Yeah, we’ve learned how to use the—and
connect the batteries. I actually put kerosene. That’s supposed to
