Tracy Bezeau: Fabric and thread have been woven together in artistic expressions for thousands of years. When does traditional needle work become an art form? Is it possible for the hobby sewer to reach that level? Here to discuss all the possibilities is Thalia Makris of Sewing Machines Etcetera. So beautiful, this is DailyWeb TV.
Today, we’re going to take ordinary and add some embroidery. Thalia, when I think of embroidery, do I need a separate machine or is there a sewing machine that has in all in one.
Thalia Makris: Husqvarna is the brand that we carry and they start from basic machines that have just a few decorative stitches and you can go into an embroidery machine that would have a lot decorative stitches as well as embroidery, so you can sew, create and then embellish and decorate with embroidery here in the decorative stitches, decorative threads and stuff like that
Tracy Bezeau: So, do you offer courses on teaching me how to embroider, just everyday products, everyday clothing.
Thalia Makris: Yes, when you purchase you machine from here, we will give you support causes to teach you how to use your machine to it’s potential and once you know how to do basic embroidery, then you can apply it to anything; things that you make from scratch or things that you bought at the store or things you’re going to throw out that you decide that you can use them again by embellishing them and making them pop to something new.
Tracy Bezeau: And we can all got through our closet and find something that we haven’t worn in a while and just adding embroidery to it, it looks brand new.
Thalia Makris: Oh it looks amazing—I mean I’ve got a bunch of stuff up here that I was going to throw out and I thought, we’ll this still fits, we can do something with it and then you put a little bit of bling to it and it’s something new. And then she says ‘Oh! Where did you get that?’ Well it’s a bit of my closet for ten years.
Tracy Bezeau: I’m noticing your jacket, did you buy this or did you create this yourself?
Thalia Makris: Well I bought this sweater and I put the embroider on it just to give it some bling and it dresses it up and I can wear it more formal now instead of casual.
Tracy Bezeau: A little bit of bling and—so you’re not only embroidering a piece of clothing but you can embellish it and—
Thalia Makris: Oh yes. So I put on some Swarovski crystals and there are all kinds of things you can use to embellish, besides crystals, you can use pins, you can use decorative threads.
Tracy Bezeau: So you’re just taking it basic everyday sweater that you’re going to throw out and you just created a fashional piece.
Thalia Makris: Yes I did.
Tracy Bezeau: So it’s the decorative thread that going to add that creative flare to our project, what aside from clothing can we embroider?
Thalia Makris: Oh anything. I’ve made a bag and I’ve put embroidery on it. Well I made it from scratch but you could take another bag and just put a symbol on it or a decorative design, fancy threads.
Tracy Bezeau: And I guess we can incorporate that into our home décor as well.
Thalia Makris: Oh yeah, you can embroider everything from toilet paper to your curtains.
Tracy Bezeau: Toilet paper?
Thalia Makris: Well you can take—
Tracy Bezeau: I can embroider my toilet paper?
Thalia Makris: You certainly can, we have some rolls here that have got some embroideries on them.
Tracy Bezeau: That would just be like a decorative?
Thalia Makris: Yeah, you could sit it on your toilet and have—it will be nice and decorative and if you really needed it, you rip that part of and then you it again.
Tracy Bezeau: Okay, so we now we can embroider our toilet paper, going aside of the bathroom, table cloths?
Thalia Makris: Table cloths, runners, place mats, pillows, curtains, towels, kitchen towels, bath towels, linens—blankets, everything, you can embroider anything
Tracy Bezeau: So we’re taking basic stuff.
Thalia Makris: Your sheets, blankets, everything, you can embroider anything.
Tracy Bezeau: That—it sounds amazing and we can now take basic stuff from our home, especially if you’re on a budget.
Thalia Makris: Oh yeah.
Tracy Bezeau: I love that. Where can somebody go to get more information on courses or getting ideas and getting inspired on embroidering?
