Female: Joining us today is Dr. Hilary Howthorne. Doctor can you tell us what are some of the biggest misconceptions about eye health.
Dr. Howthorne: One of the biggest misconceptions about eye health is whether sitting to close to the television is a bad behavior. It can harm the eyes but one of the bigger bad behaviors that is out there is actually drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and drinking too much caffeine are considered bad behaviors that can harm the eye health.
Female: Now we understand that there was a recent survey called the American Eye-Q survey. It is the second annual survey. Can you tell us what were some of the most surprising results from this survey?
Dr. Howthorne: One of the biggest surprises was – what the responders felt was the number one leading cause of blindness. Most people felt glasses or contact lens used was going to lead to blindness when in fact macular degeneration is the disease that most leads to blindness in the united states. Many of the patients that wear contact lenses are not very compliant with their contact lenses. 79% of the respondents actually replied they are not replacing their lenses as often as they should. They are over using them and they are not replacing their cases often as needed it be.
Female: And what stuff should Americans do besides taking steps to make sure that they have clean contact health but what should they do to ensure proper eye health and to prevent against eye disease.
Dr. Howthorne: Most importantly, every time your contact lenses you should wash your hands. Lenses always need to be cleaned thoroughly by rubbing of the lenses and you should discard or change your solutions daily.
Female: And where can viewers go for more information?
Dr. Howthorne: You can get more information at the American Optometric Association’s web site, that is www.aoa.org and you can find an optometrist in your area by looking at that site for more information.
Female: Terrific. Thank you very much.
Dr. Howthorne: Okay.
