Eye Exam for Children

Host: What's the appropriate time to see an eye doctor?

Speaker: Well, the pediatrician and other people at school and other health professionals do screenings of the child. They should be doing something the first time they see the child and also around six months of age, and they should also then be doing formal screening starting at the age three-and-a-half to four and every two years that are after. If they have a vision screening and they pass the vision screening, they don't necessarily need to go for an eye exam.

However, if they are either not getting the screening or they are unable to be screened or they fail the screening, they need to see the pediatric ophthalmologist at anytime, they could be either, that the parent feels something is wrong, there is no age, it's too early to be examined by the pediatric ophthalmologist. However, it is reasonable to go to the primary care specialist and have them do a screening and see if there is a need to go pediatric ophthalmologist and if they can rule out any problem, before going to the pediatric ophthalmologist, that can be considered.
