Fabulous Faux Wood Grain
Woodgrain
If a real mahogany door isn’t in your budget right now you can still have the beautiful
beauty of wood with a decorative treatment I call wood graining. Wood graining is just
the striae or dragging technique. With a new step at it wood graining can be really easy
with this are really intricate with these.
Here’s a look at the supplies, a paint tray, latex pink in wood shades and it’s one part
pink, one part latex glaze and one part water, several china bristle brushes, painters tape,
wood graining tool which you can purchase at your local paint store or online and artist
brushes.
I have already cleaned to find a base cut in my door at the color of what undertone. Now
here’s a little tip take some painter’s tape and tape off your seams for some nice crisp
edges. Make sure the paint the direction of the wood grain; I’m going to tape off all
horizontal edges that includes the edges of the trim.
If your fingers aren’t giving you a straight enough edge. Try using a putty knife. Make
sure you push the tape down really well so the paint doesn’t bleed underneath. Now
we’re going to start with a light wood tonality and we’re going to apply it in a striae
technique. Do you remember what that is if not click on it.
Step 2 with long straight strips plus a small amount of paint along the wood grain some
areas will be a little darker, some a little lighter which is sparring that enhances the
natural feel of wood. New tool, new color, it’s the slightly darker tone which we’ll still
apply using striae technique but I’m going to finesse it with this wood graining tool. It’s
going to be really cool.
Same drill, I a light coat of the darker color, then take the wood graining tool and drag it
down rocking it to create the knots and grain in wood. The edges of the tool will create a
much different look. If an area looks a little too dark lightly sweep a dry brush over the
paint. For areas the wood graining tool won’t fit into use a dry brush to create a striae.
Now if you like a little more of a challenge use the artist brushes to create some
additional wood effects. When you’re done wood graining in one direction pull out the
tape and let the door dry then repeat the processes going in the other direction. If your
wood grain is in a high tropic area I highly recommend a coat of wax or some varnish it’s
going to protect it and really bring out the detail of your wood graining.
Work quickly, again going in the direction of the grain, repainting a wedding area can
cause the varnish to gum up the surface. Hey the perfect mahogany door may not be in
the cards but knock on wood there is an alternative. Is it foe or is it real? This would
graining technique will have even the most skilled craftsman wondering.
