Jean Leloup: So, I decided to put a show, no I won’t say it.
Antonine Salina: So we are with Jean Leloup. I am Antonine Salina and we will chat with Jean who is launching his 7th studio album. So what’s the feeling?
Jean Leloup: It is pretty exciting because it is a very simple album. I wrote the songs with my guitar. I only have two musicians with me and a friend of mine singing and handling all the back vocals. It is the fist time that it is simple. Also, I have been in the mood for composing during the last two years, playing guitar all the time. Also, I have been in the mood for composing during the last two years, playing guitar all the time. So what’s exciting is that it was not complicated. Also a friend of mine owned this church we are in right now. It will soon be transformed into something else, so it is the last time we see it as it is now.
Antonine Salina: It is your 7th studio album, did you think about the significance of this number, do you think it’s important?
Jean Leloup: Never thought about that. I know more about number 6. What does seven mean, luck?
Antonine Salina: I think so.
Jean Leloup: Well if it’s luck, then it’s a good thing!
Antonine Salina: You said that some of the songs on the other albums were “fillers” and not on this one but which song do you think has the craziest story?
Jean Leloup: I would say that I never had “filler” songs but for some of my albums, a decision made of making a record so I had to force myself to come up with songs. And that gives a result that can sometimes be good but for this album all the songs came naturally. Some of them were in my mind for 20 years and I finally finished them. The craziest song on the album is called “Jeune indien” (Young Indian). In fact, we have a song called “Jeune indien” but some though that it was not quite polished. It was the only song that was not totally done. And then at the last minute, I wrote a song called “Les couteaux” (The Knives) and then we replaced “Jeune indien” by “Les couteaux.” But the cover was already printed so now it is called “Jeune indien!”
Antonine Salina: The album is called “Mile Excuses Milady” (Apologies, Milady) who’s Milady. Who does she represent?
Jean Leloup: She represents the rich lady. It is a song which a soldier sends pictures of people that died in a war in the desert. He sends pictures to the kids of the Milady and says, “Sorry Milady but one day your kids will have to know that there are not only lucky ones on earth, some others are underprivileged. It is like me saying, “I wrote things that perhaps you didn’t like. Apologies Milady.”
Antonine Salina: And what about Lucie?
Jean Leloup: That one is a hardcore. It is about a girl who decides to have her parents killed. Because she’s had enough, they are a bunch of jerks. You know those sordid stories of girls being abused by their mom and died. So I wrote a song about a girl taking revenge.
Antonine Salina: You are always working on something. What’s next; a book, a movie?
Jean Leloup: I’m working on the final cut of a movie I shot in Asia. I don’t know, I started two books and another screenplay but now I want to travel around the world, so I don’t know. I’ll try to survive.
Antonine Salina: We’ll try to travel with you. Thank you Jean!
Jean Leloup: Thanks to you.
