Facts about Trans Fats

Mary: Hi, I'm Mary. I live in Venice Beach and I first heard about trans fats about five years ago and I want to know what they are and what they do to you and why they are so bad for you?

Bonnie Jortberg: Trans fats actually have been something that over the last couple of decades food manufactures have actually created and actually added to our foods and how trans fat is created is a process called hydrogenation where you actually add hydrogens to fat and one of the reasons why food manufacturers do that is because it actually adds shelf-life and stability to a food product. Unfortunately what trans fats have a tendency to do is actually raise our bad cholesterol which is our LDL cholesterol which then leads to an increase in heart disease. Our food labels actually now need to list how much trans fat that they contain and so you can look on food label to make sure that you are only getting in very minimal amounts of trans fat since you really want to limit that in your diet.
