Facts on Stress Headaches

Sarah: Hi! My name is Sarah and I am from Bangor, Maine. How can you tell the difference between a stress headache and something more serious?

Dr. Victoria Pelak: Sarah, many people have that same question who have headaches. One of the first things that we do as physicians is look for red flags such as signs or symptoms that your headaches don't really fit with stress headaches or everyday headaches. One of the most important red flags is new onset of headaches over the age of 50. Another is if you have associated symptoms such as numbness or tingling or weakness or blurred vision. In addition, if you note that your headaches become increasingly more severe or difficult to treat with medications. These are all red flags that tell us that we should look a little bit further. If you have any of these or if you are concerned, you should speak to your doctor, it's very important to have that discussion early.
