Male Speaker: For a child to be successful and controlling the weight gain, there's a feeling sort of the sense that a kitchen is a groove, and everybody has to say, well, let's keep things out of the house, is that the way you have to do it, is this a temptation all over the place?
Deborah De Santis-Moniaci: Absolutely. We really look at the family as a team. You know, no child, obviously, children need their parents to really be able to make changes in their lives. So we would never expect a ten year old to be able to make food choices completely on their own, just like a 5 year old wouldn't do their homework likely, unless they were supervised by their parents. So parents really do play an important part in this, and the more parents are wiling to contribute and support their kids in making changes, the easier it's going to be for the child.
Male speaker: So in another words, if you have tempting food around the house in order that the kids are going to find it out of habit, so it's a good idea to decide to stop those food, those high sugar cereals, high this, high that, is that a good approach?
Deborah De Santis-Moniaci: There are some families that that works for, you know, we use much more a moderate kind of approach. If it's going to be in the home, let's moderate just how much of it is in the home.
Male Speaker: So a little step.
Deborah De Santis-Moniaci: If you are going to have some sugar syrup, that's fine. If that's something that you child really wants, but you ask them to get rid of maybe sodas and juices.
Male Speaker: You make some form of modifications?
Deborah De Santis-Moniaci: Absolutely, you know, we also advocate for families, really, let all go out for ice-cream, if we are going out for ice-cream, let's have banned all junk food. Let's say -- let's take a walk and go to the ice-cream shop together, and that's on Sunday, that's about Sunday activity, every Sunday. So that there is always a treat. There's always something that kids can look forward to things, and they'll know that those kinds of foods are banned completely from their lives.
