David: Hi it’s David Boris of Be Better Guys.com. We’re talking about the basics
the fundamentals of every guys wardrobe. And now we’re going to hit on
ties. Ties are important because this is how a guy who dresses in a suit or
with a nice shirt can really express his individuality but the key is
remember there’s a lot of ways to make mistakes here and there are ways
to do it right.
So first let’s talk about how many a guy should own. We believe a guy
should have between six and ten ties in your wardrobe. Again it depends
on how often you need to wear a tie to the office but it’s good to have
some range that you can choose from also you want to think about the
styles and the weaves.
Many ties are usually silk and that’s fine. You can also have some season
specific ties such as wool, cotton or linen to give a modulation in the way
your ties look.
As far as colors for ties, you know anything goes but there’s a lot of ways
to do this right and a lot of ways to do it wrong. So to do it right we want
to talk about having solid color ties, some rep stripe ties, some pin dot ties,
and some patterns such as this.
A couple of tips by the way on your tie, to make it look good put a little
dimple just under your chin by holding it between your thumb and your
middle finger sticking your index finger in and pulling. Also your tie
shouldn’t be too long and it certainly shouldn’t be too short. Have it come
to your belt buckle every time.
Also remember though there are types of ties that you don’t want to have.
No Santa Claus, no beer can ties, no Pittsburgh pirate logo ties, no Bugs
Bunny or Looney Toon ties and you also don’t’ want a tie that’s out dated
such as this. This was in 15 years ago. It’s not in today. You don’t want to
work on that.
Let’s talk about how some of the ties go with the shirts. First of all I’ve
got a basic blue shirt and a gold pattern tie. A good way to go, in fact I’ll
show you behind me, we have again a blue shirt and a bold tie here that
stands out strongly against the blue but you can also go for more subtle
look such as we have here with a white shirt and an orange sort of a burnt
orange tie that’s more of a pin dot style. It’s very subtle.
So if you’re having an interview for example this would be great. But
what really trips guys up is putting ties with shirts when you’re talking
about patterns. So far we’ve talked about how ties go with shirts when the
patterns are relatively easy.
Let’s talk about how it can get complicated. Here we have a very, very
aggressively striped bold shirt but we’re putting a tie with it that has a
spread pattern to it and is a little bit calmer so with a bold shirt small
pattern tie.
With basic shirt a bold tie. Brian here is also pulling off how you got a
very colorful heavily patterned shirt and a very subtle tie that sits on top of
it so when you’re thinking about matching remember bold shirt, calm tie.
Calm shirt, bold tie, if you want.
A couple more tips, dark shirt, dark tie, very Paulie Walnut, okay that
show is over so we’re not doing any Sopranos look and one more thing,
same colored shirt, same colored tie, very Regis Philbin, okay and unless
you are Regis you want to be going for a look that’s a little more modern.
Next we’re going to talk about pants and belts.
