Hell I’m Aaron Marino from Alpha M Image Consulting. Sport coat/blazer, what’s the
difference? Well if you’re not sure with the differences are hang out in watch because
today I’m going to explain the fundamental differences between sport coats and blazers
so that when you go ahead and find you can actually talk intelligently and know what
you’re looking at when you purchasing your sport coat or blazer.
Let’s start with blazers. Now what makes a blazer a blazer, the answer really comes down
to 2 main things, the fabric in a the blazer it’s always a solid color with no pattern, okay.
Typically, it comes in blue or black. The buttons always are metal, okay. Usually, they’re
gold or silver. Think of that navy blazer with those gold buttons, that’s what I think off
when I think of a blazer, okay and that really what makes up a blazer the fabric and the
metal gold buttons.
You know some people think that this jacket is timeless and classic. I happen to think that
it’s a bit dated and gaudy with those big gold buttons on. I don’t actually have a blazer to
show you, okay but that is really what makes up a blazer. The fabric and the gold buttons.
Okay, everything else is a sport coat.
So sport coat, the fabric is pretty much wider but it comes in swayed and velvet and
cotton and linen. I mean sky is the limit, you know fabrics and patterns all across the
boarder, anything you can imagine. They probably make a sport coat in that fabric. The
buttons are usually plastic where they are a lot of times a leather weave, if you’re not sure
where the leather button looks like this is it. See that typically brown or black, okay so
sport coat any fabric, plastic or leather buttons. Now the things that we’re going to take a
look at now are the intricacies with the details of blazers and sport coats that you need to
know. Let’s first start with buttons. They come in single-button, double-button or usually
three buttons, okay and really its personal preference.
There are different schools of thought as far if you’re short, you shouldn’t wear a three-
button, your tall you should wear a three-button. Really go in and try it on and it’s
personal preference and you know the single button blazer is kind of trendy and so I see
that style going out relatively soon but the double button and triple button are timeless,
okay. A double-button blazer looks like this two buttons.
Now when buttoning this you want to make sure that when you’re walking around or
standing it goes like this. You always button the first button and you sometimes button
the second button with a three-button blazer something like this there are three buttons
there you can see them, it goes like this, sometimes, always, never, okay; never when
you’re walking around or standing buttoning that last button, a little bit closed off.
The other difference when I’m talking about the two versus three-button blazer. You
know a three button blazer is going to conceal a little bit more of your shirt the two-
button is going to open up the lapels are going to be a little bit longer, okay so they’re
really the button metal differences without the buttons, okay. Go in and try them on and
see what you like. The next thing and last thing that we’re going to talk about is venting,
okay.
Venting is really the manufacture and creating slits or separations in the fabric of the
back of the jacket and both blazers and sports coats come where there is no vent and it
looks something like this. The back is solid. There’s no cut there. The next would be
single-vent which is typically more of an American style and lastly double-vented.
You’ve got two vents; it’s like a big fabric flap, okay. The reason vents are there are
basically when you sit down. The vents allow the fabric to expand and really prevent
wrinkling. If you don’t have a vent in the back of your jacket, the best idea is to take it off
and hang it on the back of your chair so that you don’t get it all wrinkled up.
Okay, so that’s pretty our lesson for today, blazer or sport coat. How to go and shop for
them, what you’re looking for and now you’re going to be able to actually talk
intelligently and know the difference. Most people don’t know the difference, okay so
any questions send them my way, I can’t wait to answer them, have a great day and I’ll
talk to you soon, bye-bye.
