Hello. I’m Galen Bontrager, owner and operator of Galen Bontrager Farm near Wellman, Iowa. And we are doing this video on how to build a chicken coop.
We are on the step now where we cover this entire pen. We’ll wrap it with chicken wire and the metal frame and get it fully enclosed here. For this step, we have a 2-foot wide chicken wire. This is cut in a 20-foot length. And I don’t bother wrapping it around the back because there will be a metal cover over that. Staple gun and the 3/8 inch sized staples is what we use for this particular project. It all fastens up here at the base, on the outsides, staple on the bottom. Fasten that all the way around to the back side. When that stapling of our chicken wire is on, it’s assembled, now we’re ready for the metal pieces.
I’ll go ahead and put the back one on first. This piece is 4 feet wide, the same with our pen, and I use this 3 quarter inch screw again with a quarter inch driver and I fasten that on. Six screws is efficient and we put that all together with those screws. Now, I come around to the front side and put in our metal piece here, six screws again. This piece is particularly cut at 46 inches, about the same as our length. We measured at the top for that 2x4. And same on the back side where we do another length of 46 inches and we fasten that with six screws. And that’s our metal cover. There are different sizes, different offerings of metal that you can use, a 29 gauge steel. This is a corrugated 10 here. So just whatever you have at your home improvement store will be sufficient.
And this concludes our step with putting the covering on the pen and we’ll move onto the next step of putting the front cover on assembling that frame.
