Host: Should I feed my existing dog and my newly adopted separately? Kevin Simpson: During the transition period, it really isn’t a bad idea to keep the dog separated while feeding. It gives you an opportunity to learn more about the habits of your newly adopted dog while you get to learn more about one another, but also for your current dog because now that changes dynamics where your current dog may feel a need to be competitive with his or her food wherein the situation beforehand they didn’t feel a need to share. So I would say definitely in the beginning, feed the dog separately and then it maybe a situation that your comfortable with and continues through the life of both of your pets.
