Welcome back to part four of Feel the Beat with FL Studio. We’re now ready to dive into the piano roll and take a look at some of the ways it can be used. Start by opening a new synth, anything that produces a basic tone will do. In the sequencer window, right click on the synth channel and choose piano roll. Now, we can create and edit chords and notes to add to our beat.
We can play the keyboard with our mouse to find a good root note or a simple melody. Adding notes works just on the sequencer window, left click to draw notes and right click to delete them. The difference here is we can move notes or change their lengths by clicking and dragging from the middle or the end of the note. The easiest way to copy a note is to hold shift while dragging the note or a group of notes.
You will also notice a second graph along the bottom here. These vertical bars represent the velocity of each note or how hard the note is played. We can click and drag these bars to change the velocity just like in the graph editor in the sequencer window. Now, let’s try to find the melody that works with our song.

As you are playing with this window, take a look under the menu at the top left corner of the piano roll. You will find some helpful options under the tools menu and you can also play with the chord section here to draw in full chords.
Remember, there are 10 parts in this tutorial so be sure to check out the other episodes in the feel the beat with FL Studio series.
