On occasion, you’re going to find yourself in what I call a hostile work environment and this is it. I’ll show you some ways so you can protect yourself when you find yourself in situations like these. Let’s get to work.
Here we have three different types of insulation that you’ll typically run across; the batt type insulation where it's all concealed in one piece, the newer blow-in insulation and here we have an old mix where newer stuff was mixed in with some older stuff. Bottom line is, the older the insulation is the nastier it is to work with.
There’s a few things you’re going to need to minimize you exposure to these type of irritants. Number one is long clothing. Make sure you wear long pants, long shirts, cover as much of your skin as possible. Two, eye protection; there’s nothing more irritating than fibreglass in your eye. Number three, a built cap, so that if any insulation is falling, you don’t want that dripping across your face and maybe down the inside of your shirt. Number four is your respirator, either dust type respirator or a fixed type respirator like these which is what I typically use.
There’s one more thing that you’ll really need to do that will help protect you in this situation. The last thing that you need to do before you get dressed is to take some baby powder liberally apply it around your neck, on your face, on your ears, around the edges of your nose, prior to put in your respirator and glasses on, around your wrist, wherever it touches, even the clothes will touch your skin and around your waist pan to make sure that any insulation that works it's way in there, don’t have the opportunity to get into your skin.
Use a baby powder; it will fill in the pores in your skin, not allowing the fibre glass insulation to get into your pores. Now that you’re all powdered up and look like Casper the friendly ghost, it’s time to get dressed and go ahead and get work.
Once you’re completed with the work and you did everything that you could possibly do to minimize your exposure. You’re still not going to be feeling very good. It's time to hit the shower. I’ll show you the way you should do that to help make you feel better as quickly as possible.
Now it’s time to clean up, you need to take a shower and the first thing you do is make that shower water just as cold as you can stand. Follow that up by closing your pores clean and that stuff out. Then go ahead and follow it by a hot shower to open up your pores and go ahead and try to get the rest of it washed out that’s already worked its way in.
