One of the things that’s very predominant when there is a weapon involved in a close quarter’s attack is that people tend to focus so much on the weapon itself. Now sometimes in the struggle, if you're lucky enough, the weapon gets put to the side, it falls down. If they have a weapon, it goes down the ground. Even the few have a weapon. If you're in the military your rifle falls down from a blast or something like that and you're being overrun or if you're on a home invasion attempt. You try to get your weapon out or they have a weapon and somehow it gets loose.
When people are in adrenalized state and there is a weapon involved, everybody tends to focus on the weapon itself. And that's just kind of that monkey brain that happens when the adrenaline is flowing and everybody is focused on “I need to get that weapon because that’s my force multiplier right there”. So what you need to do is stop worrying about the weapon and start worrying about the man. You always want to fight the man not the weapon. So in this case, we’re going to say that he is over there. Somehow this rifle got blown down there, something happened. It could be a handgun or anything. It could be a knife. It could be any sort of weapon whatsoever. And the rifle falls in between us.
Now, his monkey brain is focused right there on the weapon. So what I'm going to do is as we’re both coming in for the weapon, he’s focused on that. What I'm going to do is play for the weapon but as he is reaching down, I'm just going to use combative. I'm going do football kick him to the head. I'm going to take him out on the side. I'm going to do something here. I'm going to hammer fist him because as soon as I get him on the defensive, that's when I actually have the weapon. And I can clear it and actually put it into use.
So, always remember any time there is a weapon is involved and it's loose, do not fight the weapon, fight the man.
