Hey guys this is E. Meek 77 again. I am here with a quick, really quick final cut pro tutorial express tutorial. It is about changing the speed of the clip and how to do it without changing the duration of your clip. So, let me fire up final cut pro. So, the first thing I want to do is show you how to remap your keyboard. We are going to remap it with add at it button and set a goal over here on your tool bar and click the razor blade or hit the keyboard shortcut B. We are going to remap the keyboard to where when you just hit a button it insert and edit. So, go up to tools, keyboard layout, customize and this will bring out your keyboard layout. Make sure you go over in your bottom left corner and unlocked it so you make changes and this shows you all the keys and shortcuts stuff for the applications. So we are going to remap one of these keys with the add edit command. So, go up to your search field box and tap the word add, the add edit should come up. It should be the third one banner. So, take it and drag it over to your slash key beside the shift button right here. It is an empty key, its free, it does not have anything.
As you can see, mine has already mapped to the add edit. Yours probably would not have this little imbuement will be blank. So, what we are trying to is just grab the add edit command and drag it over to your slash key and drop it. Now, what will this do is every time you hit this button, it will insert an edit and it will cut the click, now that we got that done, lock your keyboard. So now, let us get in to it here. I have a clip loaded into my viewer and I will going to drag it down into my time line. Now, if I want to change the speed of this clip to slow it down for slow motion or speed it up for fast motion. We can right click, scroll down to speed, this will bring up your speed dialog box and 100 percent means real time. Over a hundred is faster than a real time, below is slower. So, let us enter a speed of 25 percent to get a good slow motion and hit the enter and as you can see it indicates that the speed of the clip is 25 percent, but if you notice, look how long the clip has become and believe me this can actually make big problems in your sequences if you have clips before and after. If you have only 1 clip in your sequence it will be fine, but if you have several clips and it is going to push everything down the time line. It can be really a bother.
So, how do you change the speed of the clip without changing this duration? Well let me undo this, right here in command Z and I will show you. So, let us say, right one, the shark here in the canvas comes into view about right there. We want it to go to slow motion. So, this is where that add edit command, we just remapped on our keyboard comes into play. So, I am going to find the spot, I want to slow motion to begin and I am going to hit my add edit button, which will boom! As you can see, it adds an edit. It splits the clip right there. Just lock the razor blade tool. It is just really a lot faster. Now, that we have our spark map, it is marked with an edit, add edit spot here. How do we get this portion of a clip to slow down without changing its duration? Well, this is how. Go to the add edit you have just inserted at the beginning, right there. Snap it by hitting an N if it not turned on. Go up to the view and under view you will see match frame and under match frame scroll over to source file. What this does is, it matches the viewer, we put the viewer to the source clip, over here in your browser. It puts on the exact frame. As you can see these frames are now matched. So now, that we have our matched frame, these color bars feed dialog box by hitting the command J and entering a speed let us slow it down maybe to 25 percent and hit okay.
Now, where do we go from here? Well, this is where you have to insert the clip. So, for the final cut express users, you take the clip and drag it over to your replace right here. Replace the blue one. You want to replace this clip in the time line with this clip that you just matched the source file. So, drag it over to replace or if you have final cut pro, just hit the little blue replacement button. Like that, right there. Now, as you noticed the clip has not changed in duration at all. So, let us go back and play it and as you can see, the clip slows down when we get to that point and the duration of the clip has not changed.
