David Epstein: Welcome to this week’s tip segment here at GrowingWisdom.com and one of the things that I am going to talk about in this tip segment is just all the different plants, some of which you might think are weed which are kind of interesting to kind of let cultivate themselves and behind me is this big stand amongst other things a Goldenrod. And Goldenrod gets a bad rot it really does, most people are not allergic to it and it is does not cause hay fever but it is this great yellow color and there are many different varieties of it. I put a lot of this in my yard.
Yes I have actually planted this stuff and it does really well. I mean here, there is no irrigation, nobody maintains this, and look it just grows and grows. Some of the other things we have in here, we have some Black-Eyed Susans which are another one of those plants.
You have an area that you just do not want to touch if you plant them they establish themselves. You never have to water them. We got some Echinacea going on, we got this wonderful Queen Anne’s lace here which again a lot of people think, oh look it is a weed but you know what sometimes weeds are really beautiful. Weed is just something that maybe you do not want in your garden. Well, I like this I have actually put Queen Anne’s Lace all along the edge of my drive way moving towards the road way because it does well there it takes the salt, it takes all of the harsh environment that you have when the road meets your property.
So, just a couple of ideas, there is also some Thistle here which does really well and gets this wonderful purple flower and that looks interesting. So, next time you have a sort of a challenging area perhaps you should think about using one of those plants that you might think is a weed but really you cultivate it and let it grow it is kind beautiful.
