Hey what is up guys, Walt Ribeiro here. We have a question here from Jenna, let us get straight into it. Do not forget to subscribe to the mailing list, the forum. So let us do this. Jenna here says is there a rule for that when I am writing a melody that it has to be between octaves. So in case anyone does not know what an octave is, it is that when I am playing a note, let us say this C right here, the next octave up or octave lower would still be the C. But it would be one at the top. So here is my next octave up. Here is my octave down. So here is my two octaves. So when I am writing a melody, he said that I write a melody over the octave and the answer is yes. There are no rules in music at all. If you wanted your melodies to be like this, it does not matter. It is all fair games and besides, that sound pretty cool. And, maybe the fact that your music is played outside the octave and breaks some rules is maybe that is what you do, maybe you become the internets octave writer. It is just the idea that there are no rules in music and that is the beauty of it, so yes. Absolutely, you can break all the rules and you can even make up a few on your way there. So, a very cool stuff that is better. It depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for a lead, rhythm, death metal or what kind of anthem.
So now, we are getting to that. In 12 notes, why it is an octave, octave is eight. Well the octave is the idea of why the octave is called an octave. It is not called 12-bridge. It is actually eight notes within the scale. So that when I walk up the scale although it is 12 notes, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve and then it continues. That is the reason why it is called eight. It is because it is actually eight within the scale. So whereas my C pattern might have 12 notes in it, no, it bumps my octaves, pull those in within the scale and it is actually eight notes. DO, RE, MI, FA, SO, LA, TI, DO, DO, TI, LA, SO, FA, MI, RE, DO and so that is why it is called an octave because there is actually eight notes in the major scale and you are going eight notes up from where you started within the scale.
How do you identify a high octave notes as compared to mid octave notes? What fret identifies with the A note in the staff without adding extra lines? That is a good question. You are asking me in a piece of sheet music like this. Here is your treble cleft and here is the A, which A, where would I play that A on the guitar? This A right here is your open string A, which on the guitar is right here. That A right here is the A. I was looking at it. It is the A on the second fret of the G string. That is how it works. Well all this music, I move everywhere. If I go like this, I hear a sound pitches. If I go like this and hear sounds over there, if I move my chair and the back of my chair hits the piano, that is music, music here, music there, music everywhere, so music is everywhere. At least here, in this studio, it is amazing. That is the idea of where that A is right there. If you wanted to hear your open string A, it would be here. That would be your open string A where the note below or on your second ledger line below the B.
All right, so let us keep this going. Walt do you have any tips on how to practice sight reading music? Practice it every single day. That is the trick. The trick is to love it, live it, love it, be passionate about it, teach it to someone and do it every single day and you take it slow my man. Your patience is the key for life. It is not just a virtue. It is a way of life. All right so I love bass octaves, it was a lot of love my friend.
Walt my band is two guitars and one drum set, would it be okay without a bass? Yes, what is the band without the bass part? The White Stripes? They do not have a bass part. Korean, absolutely like that is what it is all about. You just want to take your time with the sight-reading thing and listen, here is how it works out with everything is that you learn a little bit everyday. So today, you learn eight notes. Tomorrow, you learn 16 no
