Hi! My name is Laurel and I’m apprentice here at Shar. And I’m going to talk to you about determining the correct size instrument for the player.
The best way to find the correct size instrument for you is to be able to try some out. So if you’re able to go into a local music shop or if your teacher has several sizes readily available, that’s going to be the best way to go.
To test the size of a violin, you want to hold it as if you were going to play. You then want to extend your left arm out, palm facing up, and wrap your fingers around the scroll. The scroll should place into the palm of your hand and the tips of your fingers should just to be able to touch the pegbox. If your fingers are unable to reach the pegbox, the instrument is maybe too big. If the instrument is too small, you’ll see the slack in your arm while extending it.
To measure the player’s arm, have them extend it out to their side, parallel to the floor, and then have them move it a little bit into the front of their body, palm facing up. Then measure from the base of their neck to the middle of their palm and then write down how many inches that is.
Now take this measurement and compare it with these charts. As you can see, this form of measurement works for either violin or a viola. If you need any extra time to look at the chart, please pause the video.
If you have any further questions, you can make a comment on the video or talk to your teacher or a violin shop.
