Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy for Thyroid Cancer
Interviewer: Usually with tumor what’s an FNA?
Dr. Shawn Ciecko: FNA stands for Fine Needle Aspiration. And what that is it’s a small needle, smaller than the one used to draw blood, which is used to take a small sample of cells within a nodule in the thyroid gland.
Now, the thyroid gland is low in the neck and sometimes your doctor will feel and may just feel a vague fullness there. An ultrasound can be used to guide the needle to obtain the correct cells from the nodule itself and that’s usually done by either pathologist who’s trained in ultrasound, biopsies or head and neck surgeon who does that.
Interviewer: Is that done in the office or the hospital?
Dr. Shawn Ciecko: It can be done in either place. People like myself are trained in ultrasonography and biopsy and we do them in the office.
Interviewer: Are there any greater concern in doing the test that you would do it in the hospital over something in the office, or any characteristics?
Dr. Shawn Ciecko: Sure. Most of these can be done in the office, as long as the equipment is present or if your physician has an ultrasound machine that’s capable of taking good ultrasound then most of these are safely done in the office.
