Helaine: Hi, I am Helaine from Bradenton Florida. Are ALA supplements is effective as fish oil in lowering the risk of heart disease? Matthew Sorrentino: Hi Helaine, ALA are one of the good oils that we recommend as a nutritional substitute. They may not be as effective in reducing the risk of heart disease as Omega 3 oils, the oils that we get in fish, we usually recommend fish oils either as marine fish or as fish supplements in patients who have heart disease to try to reduce their risk. ALA can help and in conjunction with fish oils may be a good nutritional supplement for patients with heart disease. So usually we recommend ALA a good oil in conjunction with fish oils for patients with heart disease.
