Maggots, by far, the most common and readily available bait. You can buy them in any tackle shop and just about any fish swimming will take a maggot. Let us take a look at some.
Here we have the standard maggot, or the big maggot is also known,
(Examples)
That this maggot is bread from a blue butterfly and it comes in a variety of colors. You can buy this in red maggot, bronze maggot, yellow or even green. You can buy them as mixed maggot or you can buy them as individual colors.
Use these on a size 18 or 20 medium to fine wire hook.
Next, we have the pinky and a pinky is about half the size of the big maggot
(Examples)
Absolutely brilliant for canal fishing. Again, the natural color of this maggot is slight white-pink but there are also dyed in different colors mainly red and fluorescent colors.
Use this maggot on a size 22 hook.
The smallest maggot that we use is the Squat.
Now, the Squat is normally used for loose feeding of food or catapult for feeding when fishing from brim or small fish. We also use this in-ground bait will move specifically target in brim. It can also be used on a hook and we tend to use this when bites are really hard to come by and we would use this on a fine wire 24-hook.
Finally, the Caster and the caster is the chrysalis of the white maggot.
(Example)
Casters are excellent bait for big roach, carp and tench. Casters tend to be used to actually catch bigger and better quality fish. There are also very good loose-fed in the water for carp and brim.
Now to hook a maggot, we use a size 18 hook here,
(Demo)
If you look at the maggot, you have a pointed end and a flat end. Now, when we want to put the hook in is actually the flat end so we need to pick the maggot up. Gently squeeze with the flat end exposed and pass the hook just sneaking it through the skin on the end of the maggot.
(Demo)
Now that maggot is hooked just gently through the skin and we have got plenty of hooks showing to penetrate the fish.
