Hey listen, since we are talking, I always like cool free stuff.I don't know if many of you have ever heard of company called SolarWinds. The SolarWinds makes just these super cool networking tools. I happen to use one of them right now. It's an Exchange Monitor which is free. They sent me an email the other day talking about, hey, we've got like five great free tools that you can download and use absolutely no charge.
So one of them is called -- for NetFlow and what NetFlow does is it answers questions like why the network is so slow, identify who is using up the most bandwidth on there and analyzes your traffic spikes on your network.
Free downloads, you want to go www.solarwinds.com. They have the Exchange Monitor tool. Again, that's free. Looks at things like your exchange server health including the services, the mail queues are okay, the host server health, all that comes with the Exchange Monitor tool, another free one.
TFTP Server; that let's you currently upload and download images from multiple -- concurrently upload and download images from multiple devices, upload and download configurations to devices and transfer files larges than 32 megabytes, again that's free.
The Advanced Subnet Calculator; that is a great tool right there. Compute addresses for IP subnets, forward and reverse DNS resolution, CIDR calculator, an ability to generate list of addresses by subnet, another free tool.
And finally Wake-On-LAN, so you have got a computer that's kind of asleep or a remote computers kind of asleep out there on the network. This basically sends what's called a magic packet which is basically packet that's designated for that particular Mac address. It will tell Windows to power up that machine.
These are absolutely free tools. I Just seen an email come in a few minutes ago, they're releasing a free tool to apparently monitor virtual machines. Now I haven't had chance to look at that. These guys at SolarWinds are great. To provide these kind of really tools, any IT, any network administrator out there probably ought to consider having these tools in their tool chest, making sure that you have got a really smooth running network.
