Hi! I am Janice Cox and I am the author of Natural Beauty at Home and today on Everyday Dish TV, I am going to show you how to make fizzing bath bombs.
You have probably seen this bath bombs in bath and beauty boutiques or department stores across the country, they are super easy to make and they just common kitchen ingredients. The science behind them are a little bit – have you ever done baking soda and vinegar together and it creates carbon dioxide? Well, that is the same theory behind the bath bombs. We use citric acid crystals, baking soda, cornstarch and a little bit of oil. Mixed together, they will create a dough that when added to water, you will get that chemical reaction of the acid and the base that will create the carbon dioxide and fizz in your bath tub, which is also very relaxing and soothing to your skin.
Let us get started, you take about a cup of citric acid crystals. These might be a little tricky to find. I usually buy them where they sell wine and beer making equipment and also in the hardware store where they are canning fruits and vegetables. You can find it sometimes called powdered Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid so there is a lot of difference sources and even online if you search on citric acid, you will find some online sources.
So it is a cup of citric acid and a cup of baking soda. They are super simple to make and then a half a cup of cornstarch just right out of your kitchen cupboard and then a half a cup of light oil. I use almond oil. You can use sunflower oil, canola oil, any oil you have in your kitchen cupboard. Mix that all together and you can use a spoon or if you want to use your fingers, you can. I sometimes just make these unscented, uncolored but in the store, a lot of times, you will have energizing bath bombs that are peppermint scented or relaxing bath bombs that are lavender. All you need are some essential oils that you can get in a natural food store or the grocery store. And what you do is just add a couple of drops to your dough or mixture of I think this is peppermint so these are going to be kind of energizing. And again, if you want to add color, you can use natural color by adding some herbs or spices or just food coloring from your bakeshop or grocery store. So I will just put a couple of drops of food coloring and continue to mix until you have kind of a soft dough. Just kind of mix it all together until you can work with it and then now what you can do, I like to use just muffin tins but you can just shape this with your hand. You can use candy molds. You can use pieces of PVC pipe. Cut a water bottle and use the bottom of the water bottle, anything that you can use as a mold.
I sometimes will sprinkle a little herb or some colored bath salts or sugar in the bottom. It is kind of just extra decoration, so you can do that. Some people put like dried rose petals or lavender. Just be as creative as you want. What you will do is just kind of take your mixture and just press that right into your muffin tin or if you are making one as a bomb, or you want like more of a ball just kind of make a ball and set it right there to dry. And then what we are going to do is let this sit for a couple of hours or even overnight until they are nice and hard and then you will un-mold them.
Well now, I have a pan that I had made up ahead of time that sat for overnight. And so while these are resting, I will show you how easy it is to just un-mold these and package them up for gift giving. Just take your muffin pan and turn it upside down that is all you have to do and they release very easily. These are some finished ones. You can use whatever color you want. Dried herbs, whatever shape you want. And if you want to package it up maybe in a cellophane bag or put three or four in a jar and tie a big bow on it, it makes a great gift for the holidays, for birthdays, or as a hostess gift. You know, just let your imagination go.
So now, to demonstrate what would it be like to how to use these, you just take one of the bath bombs into a warm tub of water and simply dump it in and you will see they in
