Flip Ultra - Tech Review
I want to take a couple of minutes today to talk about video. And when I talked about video, I’m not talking about television or movie video. I want to talk about video on the web. It’s interesting because in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, more video was delivered in any summer game that year than in any of the summer games all at added up. Why, because you’re able to watch video on the internet that made all the content available online.
Well, it didn’t start with the Olympics. As a matter fact years ago when YouTube first cam e out, video became very popular on the web. Today, we’re going to look at the device called the Flip. Its primary purpose in life is to take video. It looks like a digital camera. It’s not a digital camera. It’s actually a video recorder and it’s not a great video recorder. What I mean by that is not on this HD Video recorder that you’re going to buy to take on your summer vacation. You know it’s not the kind of thing that you’re going to drop. You know few thousand dollars on. This is actually just a little tiny video taker if you will that records a video to a little hard drive at 640x480 resolutions. Its got about a Gig storage inside of it so it can take about an hours worth of this video and essentially its pretty crop it quality ,perfect for the internet. Seriously, most of the videos that you see up online these days are viral videos where they’re being shared by thousands of people on sites like YouTube or MySpace. They take them with these basic digital little cameras and they play online. They’re great for sharing information.
Let me show you how this one works. It’s kind of cool. It’s got a really simple button on the back of it. A big red button and that button is the record button. So, once I pressed that record I can actually start recording and then you can actually simply just go back and press to play button to look another videos. If I pop the little latch on the side here as you can see, pull that out. It’s got a little USB connector. I’m going to show you how this connects to my computer by simply plugging it into the side here very straight forward into the USB slot. As soon as I plug it in, you can see that little menu is how do you want to look at what’s on this device. Kind of sees like being a USB fast drive. I’m going to say open up my Flip camcorder videos and you’ll see a little screen that pops up on here and I have a number of different options that I can use. I can actually look at all the videos that I’ve taken. I can edit some of the videos that are in there. Some basic functions that you can do to spy things together but more importantly, I can click on this button called share and if you look it on this left here it shows me all the videos on the device and it shows me all the different places that I can share too.
I’ve got AOL, I’ve got YouTube and we’ve got MySpace TV pretty cool. It doesn’t have things like Facebook and some of the other user generated type of websites that you can load video too. But don’t worry about that because you can still access them off the hard drive and upload them to those places and who knows in future generations at these thing might have those sites as well. The other thing of course being stand-alone device, if you do want to just show those videos to people on something like a TV, you can do it, it’s got a little TV port here as well. You simply just connect this to the device and you can see it brings it up on a TV behind me here and if you look we’ve got a little picture of our office mascot MILO and I can get MILO doing a little jingle about our company. Take that little video of them. I’ll play it here and we can upload that up on the YouTube and then who knows maybe five people watch it. Maybe everybody in the office about 40 people to watch or maybe 400,000 people watches it and that’s the power of viral video in the internet.
If I can make this little dog do something, which in this case he hasn’t really, done anything, we make it a lot of people to watch it and that’s the power of video that you put on the web. Take it out little camera like this and put up online. I should mention this little device sells for about $150.00. So, pretty cheap way to get into taking videos and upload them onto the web.
