Ken Dolan: It slightly bothers me. Hello first of all, hi everybody, that your videos are more popular than mine. But that’s okay. My ego is fragile.
Daria Dolan: Intelligence always wins in the end.
Ken Dolan: Because your part one, supermarket tips was so good, people said “since part one, food prices have gone up and we need some more, so give us some more.”
Daria Dolan: Well, if you want to become an expert, you could take over the shopping.
Ken Dolan: Okay, next tips. That’s not a tip. That’s one to avoid. Let me ask you one. I’m price stupid here. I hate shopping by the way but I’m going to pretend I know what I am talking about. As the produce manager of local produce, less gas cost, less distribution, less hands touching it, crazy or not?
Daria Dolan: No, it’s not crazy at all. In some of this big change it tough finding local produce but I think as we have more salmonella outbreaks etcetera, more stores are going to be forced to start looking a little close at home. And that will save you some money on produce because if it doesn’t have to be trucked long distances, or flown in from some place else, no gas, well, some gas but not a lot of gas will be used and it should keep the prices cheaper and allow you to buy more fresh fruits and veggies.
Ken Dolan: On a second tip which is buying in bulk that can cost in sums. We’ve got napped a couple of weeks ago but we didn’t move. We have to throw away some of my favorite Hoody’s Peanuts. Remember the big Hoody’s peanuts we get which I love? Well, we’re moving and busy but we have to throw a few away because it was so large. So if you can find you can do that.
Daria Dolan: Well, it’s so large and we haven’t eaten them so we ended up, they were turning.
Ken Dolan: So what you’re saying is there are deals in bulk buying but don’t buy more than you can eat and use before it goes bad.
Daria Dolan: And particularly if you’re going to buy in bulk, buy nonperishable items. You know things like paper towels. Things like garbage bags.
Ken Dolan: You buy your big paper towel later.
Daria Dolan: Yeah.
Ken Dolan: Let me buy it by the ten or twelve.
Daria Dolan: Yeah, exactly. So buy in bulk but not perishable because if you buy them in bulk on perishable food, you don’t use them. Now you’re throwing them away and you’ve wasted some more money.
Ken Dolan: Here’s one for me. Are you ready?
Daria Dolan: Yeah.
Ken Dolan: But what you need not what you want. Daria gives me list sometimes like a “honeydew list”, I get extra stuff.
Daria Dolan: It’s amazing you know. He can come home I had three things for him to pick up.
Ken Dolan: Oh, not this story.
Daria Dolan: He comes home with seventeen items.
Ken Dolan: You didn’t know that Oreo’s double stuff is a new food group.
Daria Dolan: I guess you did that. Also, it’s time to cut the cord with those well-known brands. You know the ones that are advertised all over television and newspapers and radio.
Ken Dolan: That cost money to do.
Daria Dolan: It cost money and you’re paying for them to try and sell you more items. Store brands have become so tasty. There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t buy store brands or generics.
Ken Dolan: Hold on. Sometimes I think, sometimes the store brands are just private labeled big brands at a less price.
Daria Dolan: Yeah. Absolutely. Also at your drug store, I know we’re on supermarkets. But at your drug store,
Ken Dolan: No. we’re trying to save money.
Daria Dolan: Buy the store brands. You know if you’re at CVS or Walgreen, get that generic brand because if you hold up the two bottles as the ingredients are listed.
Ken Dolan: Same thing.
Daria Dolan: The one that has the most in it and always the first listed in it digresses down to the least amount of whatever’s in there. If you compare the two, they’re exactly the same. Why would you pay for the one that advertises when you can get your local CVS or Walgreen brand, or whatever your drugstore is?
Ken Dolan: Can I give the website?
Daria Dolan: Yes.
Ken Dolan: A lot of people make fun of people who use coupons. Please do not say coupon. Please. Coupon. There’s a very good website which is there.
Daria Dolan: Careful. Certain parts of the country will continue to say coupons.
Ken Dolan: They now hate me.
Daria Dolan: Yup.
Ken Dolan Whoever they are. GroceryGame.com. I’ve been on it. I’m not kidding you. It’s a wonderful website for coupons. In fact, they have a dollar. ’m not sure how long it last but for a dollar, there’s a free trial. You’re not going to believe it. I did it. I did. You think I’m kidding you. I punched in our zip code and it came out with the publics across the street.
Daria Dolan: Wow.
Ken Dolan: A publics across. It came up with six or seven stores when Dex say publics I figure what they were. All with an easy driving distance. I put the cursor on publics, boom. Coupons came up. GroceryGame.com. Take a look at it. I was very surprised and impressed.
Daria Dolan: Can I go on?
Ken Dolan: No. You have more?
Daria Dolan: Check your receipt. You know, occasionally, something scan incorrectly or don’t get scanned the right way, or gets scanned twice instead of once. Don’t be on the cell phone.
Don’t be looking at the magazines at the take out and watch what everything goes through on that scan. They all have their screens down in front of you so that you can see what your bill is growing to as they check your items out. Keep an eye so that you can catch mistakes before you get home. Then try and prove that “I only bought one of this, not two.” And I love Costco. I’m a veteran Costco user. But I’ve cut the number of trips that I’m making to Costco because of gasoline prices.
Ken Dolan: Don’t spend nine dollars where the gas is saved ten cents on a tomato. However, can I give a couple of websites where you can check the best gas in your area? If you still want to drive to Costco.
Daria Dolan: Or maybe you want a carpool with another friend.
Ken Dolan: To go there.
Daria Dolan: To go there.
Ken Dolan: GasBuddy.com. GasBuddy.com and FuelMeUp.com before you goes driving a long way to the clubs. That’s it. Time’s up. Say goodbye.
Daria Dolan: Well, I just want to say I’d rather see you put a hundred thousand foods on your table than a hundred dollars in your gas tank.
Ken Dolan: Thank you
