Jeff: Hi! I’m Jeff from Palm Harbor, Florida. I wanted to know if there are any foods or drinks that really make you feel better when you have the flues. Now, I’ve heard of chicken soup, but is there anything else that really works?
Dr. Melissa McNeil: Jeff, we heard that question a lot. And there is a lot out there, you know the old adage, starving fever, fever cold. Well, what it really means is that you need to take off making sure that you stay hydrated. Probably the better adage is take into aspirin and drink, plenty of foods and call me in the morning; that’s what chicken soup does. Chicken soup keeps you hydrated, it’s warm, it’s got a little bit salt in it because of the warm that will soothe your throat, the salt, the fluids, and the warm will help your nasal secretions more liquid; it makes it easier to cough up mucus, if you have it down in your chest.
So, chicken soup this is good as it gets, anything that’s warm, anything that’s liquid, anything and that’s not too heavy that’s where you want to go, when you’re not feeling well.
