The X’s & O’s with Nathali Parker
The Pro’s Corner
Catching the Ball
Danny Farmer
Nathali: I’m so excited I’m here with Danny Farmer. You’re going to teach me
how to catch.
Danny: How to catch?
Nathali: Yeah I need to know like what your best tips are to catch a ball and run
rounds.
Danny: Okay, being an ex-athlete. Already that one step ahead of the curve, I
think what we’re doing here is running a 10 yard in round.
Nathali: 10 yards and so.
Danny: I’m going to teach you a little bit about running the actual route.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: And then about catching it’s all about keeping your hands in front of you.
Nathali: Yeah, putting our hands in front of us.
Danny: Yeah, it’s all about keeping your hands in front of you and watch the ball.
Nathali: And watch it.
Danny: And having soft hands.
Nathali: Soft hands. What does soft hands mean?
Danny: Soft hands means you don’t want to go in and tackle the ball. Go with the
ball to come in to you.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: And then slowly bring it in with you.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: Size your hands as you see the ball in front of you.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: You want to kind of soften the blow.
Nathali: Yeah.
Danny: Because Kate has a got a— kind of a big arm, but no touch really.
Nathali: No touch.
Danny: They call him Kate “McNotouch.”
Nathali: [Laughs]
Danny: I’m just kidding I just made that up.
Nathali: I like it.
Danny: But he throws hard so you have to kind of soften the blow and that’s kind
of the idea.
Nathali: Is he going to throw as hard because I’m a girl.
Danny: No, no he won’t actually throw it hard at you because he actually has an
injured shoulder.
Nathali: Oh.
Danny: He can actually throw the ball pretty well which is good but he’s got an
injured shoulder.
Nathali: And he’s a lefty.
Danny: That’s not the full velocity, he’s a lefty so the spiral is going to come in a
little different but ultimately what you want to do is you want to kind of
created a triangle here so like this, right.
Nathali: Like that yeah.
Danny: And have the spiral the ball end up here and then use the rest of your
hands to kind of grab, use your fingertips and kind of grab it. You don’t
want to catch it with your palms.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: You want to try and catch with your fingers.
Nathali: My hands— fingers, strong fingers.
Danny: Strong fingers.
Nathali: What about my nails?
Danny: You don’t want to break your nails.
Nathali: I don’t want to break a nail here.
Danny: No, you’re not going to break your nails.
Nathali: I don’t want to break a nail.
Danny: I don’t think your going to break them. Alright are we ready to do this?
Nathali: Oh I’m up it’s me. Nathali.
Danny: Oh yean.
Nathali: Oh.
Danny: Okay we’re here. Nathali is going to run her first in route, square in.
Nathali: What am I doing?
Danny: So we’re going to get you out here.
Nathali: Yeah I’m going 10 up.
Danny: So here’s the deal we want to do is when we run our route we want to
obviously take off and then we’re going to plant off of our outside foot
here because we’re on an in route, right. So we want to make sure that
when we get so obviously we’re going to walk it through here.
Nathali: Oh okay we’ll walk.
Danny: And then what we’ll do is we want to make sure to get low and then plant
here off of our right foot.
Nathali: Okay.
Danny: And then take it off here.
[Demonstration]
Hey!
[Applause]
Nathali: Thank you.
Danny: Athlete, athlete. Fantastic!
Nathali: I caught the ball.
Danny: She caught the ball and she actually, you know you did a good job at
turning your hands over.
Nathali: Yeah.
Danny: Because what a lot of people do when they try and catch a lower ball is
they try and catch it like this. You actually turned your hand over and
turned it this way. This is a little bit more difficult to catch it this way but
you are able to kind of look it in and caught it out in front of you. You
caught it out in front of you; you didn’t let it attack you. You didn’t let it
attack you.
Nathali: Oh so I did the right way.
Danny: You attacked it.
Nathali: Oh.
Danny: See that’s a good job with it.
Nathali: Oh I was aggressive with it.
Danny: Yeah it was really good.
Nathali: I was offensive.
Danny: Yeah, you’re aggressive and offensive.
Nathali: Yes. Thanks Danny.
Danny: Yeah.
Nathali: We’re here right here on the X’s and O’x with Danny Farmer.
Danny: You got it.
Nathali: Nice.
Danny: Nice. Okay run some more.
Nathali: I want to.
[Demonstration]
Danny: Athlete, athlete [Laughs] Nice job.
