I am Chris Duke and today on MOTORZ I am going to show you to install a MagnaFlow Cat Back Exhaust System. Trying to decide which Aftermarket Exhaust system to purchase for your ride is nearly impossible. There are many different configurations for every vehicle on the market, each offering different performance gains and sounds. We've had got luck with Magnaflow Performance Exhaust Systems in the past with our very first episode of Motorz TV.
Now this particular exhaust, there is a 2 1/2 inch Cat-Back System with 4 inch stainless tip and a dual configuration includes all the necessary hardware. According to their Dyno charts, we should expect to see a gain of 11 Horse Power and 14 foot pounds of Torque on our 4.6 V-8. As of all other exhaust systems Magnaflow offers a lifetime warranty, let's get cracking.
Before you get started, you are going to need a Heavy Duty Low Profile Floor Jack, some Jack Stands and some Wheel Blocks, you are also going to need a 1/2 inch and 13 mm open-ended wrench, a ratchet, a 13mm short and deep socket as well as a 15mm deep socket, a socket extension, some safety goggles, a Rubber Mallet for banging out the exhaust in the position, coaxing it in the place, some work gloves, a breaker bar and if you decide to cut off your stock exhaust also a Sawzall.
After jacking up your car, take a 15mm deep socket and a Breaker bar, you want to get those bolts out of here, for the muffler, once you have got that loose, take the socket, get it off of there. On the hanger that's in the front, you've got two 13mm bolts that you are going to need to remove. On the rear hand there is three 13mm bolts, there is one here, one here and one right there and right here on this Band clamp there is a 15mm bolt.
We are going to have to remove that, just loosen that so that this whole muffler can slide right off, just wiggle this out of that pipe and your muffler comes right out. To remove these over the axle pipes, take a 15mm deep socket and loosen these clamps, there is two right here and two right there. Once you have got these two clamps loosened up these guys should be going out.
Now since we don't have a lift, the jack stands we've got our Mustang up are enough to give us the clearance to get those pipes off, so we have to cut them off and for that we return to our Milwaukee Sawzall. Place the sand bag over the pipe here to keep it from moving around. Before you start cutting just take careful note of things that are nearby like this gas tank. We want to cut right at this bend, right here.
When it comes time to install the over the axle pipes, we highly recommend you to take it to shop and borrow their lift because you do have to get your vehicle pretty high off the ground to install these. If you do, do it yourself we'll recommend that you have wheels blocks and really tall and sturdy jack stands as well as a Heavy Duty Floor Jack.
Now we've got the over the axle pipes hanging underneath the vehicle. We are going to reattach these hangers to the vehicle with the 13mm bolts that you used before to get them off. Take your two stock hangers and attach them to your new mufflers, just like that. When I take the clamps supplied by MagnaFlow and put that around. Now put this up to your vehicle and start to put it on you are going to need to wiggle around quite a bit to get it to fit just right. You are going to make sure you have at least half inch of clearance away from any other part of your vehicle, especially the plastic.
Now once you've got everything positioned in place, you've got to tighten all the fasteners and clamps from the front to the rear, that got to be very, very tight to properly line the pipes and prevent leaks, you want to torque these down to about 65 foot pounds.
Have you ever thought of using a MIG Welder to make your own exhaust modifications or repair some old rusty body panels or you are afraid of the costs or even if you could do it yourself. Well these days owning your own MIG Welder is a lot cheaper than you think, thanks to Hobart Welders. Their Handler 140 MIG Welder right here is only about 600 bucks and comes with just about everything you need to get started, assured with some protections like welding helmet, jackets and some gloves, but even those things really aren't that expensive.
The cool thing about this MIG is that it operates off a standard 115 household current and can weld steel as thin as 24 gauge all the way up to 1/4 inch steel with an output range of 25-140 Amps of steel, aluminum and flux cored wires, this is by far the best welder for the home hobbiest, especially for you guys who need to do something of your own, auto body repair.
This MIG is also a no brander to set up. You just lift the side door and this handy chart tells you based on the thickness of metal and the type of wire, how to set the polarity and where to turn the knobs on the front foot voltage and your wire speed. As for shielding gas, Hobart offers several low cost solutions as well.
First you can use Flux cored wire like this, which doesn't even use gas but it gets a little bit messy. So you either going to want to go with a reasonably sized cylinder like this one from Hobart which comes with a typical gas mix of 75% Argon and 25% CO2 or the smaller pebble sized CO2 cylinders which give you about 40 minutes of weld time. The great thing about these little guys, you can take them to your local sporting goods store and get them filled only about 5 bucks, even on the weekends.
Now Hobart backs up the Handler 140 with a warranty that covers the cost of the transformer for 5 years, the switches and controls and valves for 3 years and the torch for 1. Although there is lot of technique in welding with a little bit of practice and guidance from books, online tutorials and even Hobart's on message boards, the cost of the Handler 140 even make it even easier to learn by yourself, by playing around some scrap metal on the weekend.

Well, it can get a little trickier is with these low profile vehicles like our Mustang here, so if you don't have the right equipment and can use it in a safe environment, we highly recommend that you take your vehicle to a shop and use their lift.
