I am french. This video shows some tests. Actually, the way tgv is used is far less fast : around 300-320kph. It's very comfortable and allows me from time to time to come and see my family very quickly. The point is, it does not pollute very much, since it is powered by electricity (which is, in France, mostly provided by nuclear powerplants, so nothing in the air). In comparison, an airplane is very, very much more polluting.

It would be cool to have something similar in the US. One complaint would be that it creates too much noise pollution. They'll need to work on lowering that.

I think that this is simply a publicity stunt. Those speeds constantly on standard rails would eventually cause massive metal fatigue in the rails and have catastrophic results. Japan's speed exceeding this was using MagLev technology, however their standard Shinkansen (Bullet Train) uses rails but at about 300kph (Depending upon the route and the series of train of course). Having ridden the Shinkansen a few times, it makes me wish we could get it here in America. The ride was smooth and very comfortable. The cabins are set up in a manner that allows the banks of seats to rotate so that a family of six can sit as if they were at a table in their home. The problem is that people in America would say "it's not safe, it goes too fast", etc. All they need to do is look at Japan's safety record to see that the only deaths on Shinkansen have been because of suicides and only one derailment occured because of an earthquake, not due to safety violations and shoddy workmanship.
