Rob: Hey what's up I'm Rob we’re hanging out here with Frank Olinsky. We brought everything from the new Thread Banger poster. All right which you did.
Frank Olinsky: Yes.
Rob: Now give us a little background about like some of the work that you’ve done and some of the accomplishments.
Frank Olinsky: Probably that most important would be that I designed the MTV logo and I've done a lot of album packages. I love music but I have no musical talent. So the second best thing was to do outlines and covers and that’s what I ended up doing. I have good stuff for Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth and Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet. A lot of album packages. Remember what those were? There's a whole bunch of it.
Rob: And now, we are added to that list.
Frank Olinsky: Well, yeah, yeah, and I was asked to do a series of posters for nextnewnetworks there's going to be a series of 12. One each month for a year. And some of them I draw stuff, some of them I collage stuff. There's a few that I've built things. I started out doing the series and then I just started paying the sound of the words and what it meant you know and then it sounds kind of corny but you know this is the Thread Banger. For me, the thing that was most interesting I know nothing about fashion obviously or making fashion.
I had the idea of you know to make this out of spools and stuff. So this is thread, I mean a ribbon. This is a light switch plate. And then the final touch was putting the two needles up here like drum sticks. And a little inside story you know I needed to have this thing photographed and as it turned out I called my friend Janette Beckman who have done a lot of like amazing rock and roll photography.
Like she shot the first police cover and stuff like that and all these pictures of the Sex Pistols in dumpsters and stuff, so it’s a genetic complete—you know I got this thing and she said I don’t really shoot table top stuff. And I said well that’s all right let’s see what we can do I'm sure it’s going to be better than what I could come up with. So I thought it was funny that you know not only is it a drum kit shot by this photographer like if you go to her site you’ll be wow.
Rob: Well actually I'm going to give away a couple of these posters and we can see if we get scribble your old John Hancock.
Frank Olinsky: Sure.
Rob: Give them out as a couple of contest presents though.
Frank Olinsky: Absolutely.
