Hi, my name is Brian Stevens. I am the Senior Editor for the SatelliteTVGuide.com and I want to answer the question, is satellite TV really free?
The answer to that question is yes and no. Yes, the equipment you get, the satellite TV Dish and the Satellite TV Receiver is free, but no, the programming service will cost you money. There are two major satellite TV providers in the USA. Dish Network and Direct TV.
When you order a free satellite TV system from Dish Network, you will be asked of a small activation fee. This fee will be credited to your programming though, so in essence, your satellite TV system is free. Installation of your satellite TV station is also free. Dish network programming starts at $19.99 per month with 40 program channels and goes up to $94.99 for 350 channels including Showtime, Stars, HBO, Cinemax and Sirius Satellite Radio. Dish network offers more movies, shows and games than cable or DirecTV. And with one of their free DVR receivers, you can record, pause and fast forward live TV.
With DirecTV, you may be required to pay a small deposit which will be refunded. So again, your satellite TV system is free and so is your installation. DirecTV programming packages start at $29.99 per month for 115 channels and goes up to $63.99 per month for 265 channels including Showtime, Stars, HBO, Cinemax and XM Satelite Radio. DirecTV offers more sports program than cable or Dish Network including the popular NFL Sunday Ticket and has more HD Channels.
The bottom line, if you watch just a few television programs a week, then satellite TV probably is not for you. If, on the other hand, TV is one of your primary forms of entertainment and you want the biggest variety of shows, movies and sports or if your cable bill is beginning to equal you mortgage payment, then satellite TX may be just the ticket.
