Manuel Bulnes, President of Chile in 1841, inspired by the concern of the Chileans decided to take possession of the Patagonia and The Land of Fire.
To stop the existing danger of European Empires that could take possession of proclaim its discovery.
He organized an expedition that started in Ancud in a small ship commanded by Juan Williams with 23 people on board.
They arrived to the “Punta de Santa Ana” in the 21 of September 1843. That day Williams took possession of the Magellan Straight and the surrounding territories, founding Fuerto Bulnes.
The rough climate and the low chances of developing farming in the area, plus the decieces made them the colonies. 60 kilometers north of the fort in a place called Sandy Point by the British sailors.
In the spring of 1848, they started to construct a village and the 18th of December 1848. the Governor established in what today in Punta Arenas.
The reconstruction of this fort was for it century celebration in 1943. Also reconstructed this millennium, it maintain the same materials used in that time, bricks made of mud, weed and moss.
