The head-to-head battle continues between the new Infiniti G37 and the BMW 335i as the two competitors square off at the Streets of Willow road course. In the previous video, we took you for some hot laps in the new G37. Now it's time to test BMW's turbocharged 335i.
We just had a few hot laps in the new 2008 Infiniti G37. Really surprising car but now we're in the BMW. This thing is legendary for its performance and we're going to see how it's going to do out of the streets of Willow.
Nice power there. This is the 335i. This one has a 3 liter Inline-6 engine but the real special thing is it has twin turbochargers with intercoolers. This car is rated at 300 HP with 300 pound-feet of torque. The torque is definitely higher than the G37 so we're going to see how it does out here.
Let's turn off the tracks control because it's already trying to slow me down now. See how this car does. Wow! Good torque, I am out of the corner there. Deep in the throttle and come the turbochargers and the car takes off.
First impression on this, is we're getting up the speed, get some heat in the tires as this 333i is much quieter, much more solid feeling than the Infiniti. The Infiniti is fast and fun but this one is definitely a lot more refined, feels a lot more button down, a little less nervous, a little less on edge. So now here is our first time through this faster came. See how it does. Pretty good; there you go.
Now the torque is real buttery smooth and that's the Infiniti you got a way for the engine to get on the higher roughs then it makes great power whereas this BMW, look at that. It is deep into the throttle, the turbo is hit and this thing is off. I've driven a lot of turbocharged cars before, but I have to say of all the cars, this BMW 335 probably has the least invasive turbo lack. It's right there off throttle. Real nice, oh, look at that; look at that, real, predictable and nice.
I should say that this BMW has slightly less aggressive wheels and tires than the G37. G37 has 19 inch. These are 18 inch. These are little less aggressive but they seem to be sticking quite well. The breakaway on the tires is very predictable, very linear, relatively easy to catch. This thing has a lot of grip and it's so quite, so smooth to get the feeling that the G37 is probably a little - look at that, right during the pull, the backing comes around, makes things fast.
I get the feeling of the G37 is probably a kick quicker out on the race course. I definitely think the G37 has a little better brakes on it and our 60 to 0 braking test, the cars were identical, but lap after lap out here, I think the G's breaks are little better when it comes to high heat. Oh boy this car is so easy and so fun to drive. It's so qualitative. Look at that.
The Infiniti makes a lot more noise. It's a little more trashy in the engine and dry terrain. This car is a little more subdue, little more quite. But boy, when you put the pedal down, she really goes. You have the brakes there, you get a little indication of getting hot, top and turn to right there. Boy! This is a real dream. I'm having a great time in this car.
The nice thing actually about both the 335 and the G37 is a relatively descent driver. You don't have to be a professional. You could go out there, put down some pretty quick laps and be relatively safe.
Okay, we have some, kind of, a lympho-mode going here I think. It won't be give be any throttle. So the engine temperature isn't too hot. The oil tanks a little bit up there and I took away all the throttle. You'd floor it and it will do absolutely nothing. So I've turned off everything. Let her cool down a little bit, but I will say that the Infiniti did not get hot or shut down.
On the road course, the G37 and the 335i perform similarly. However, the turbocharged 335i had some cooling issues that BMW engineers are addressing. It's the same cooling issues that cause other 335i tester to run hot on the track. This issue combined with a price of about $8,000 above the G37. It has this leaning towards the Infiniti for the winner of this show.
