AJ Vickery: So now, I got your phone number saved.
Lindsay Smith: Scary.
AJ Vickery: Now, I know who to call in the middle of the night when I’m in trouble, when I’m in jail.
Lindsay Smith: No, no deep breathing okay?
AJ Vickery: It wasn’t me. We’re talking about mobile devices today and specifically GSM mobile devices that use little SIM cards that you put on the phone. A lot of the phones actually store information on there including SMS messages. You can also store things like phone numbers. Programming in phone numbers when you’re on the fly and using this keyboard is useful. I mean it’s the way to do it, but did you know that you can actually read that information inside the computer? If you can actually read, get a SIM card reader and a software that will do it.
Lindsay Smith: So basically, all you really need to do that is we’ve got the Dekart SIM Card Reader here and then you need software on your computer called the SIM manager. And as AJ’s just getting the SIM card out here, oh perfect, that’s lovely. So essentially, what happens is you just plug that into the card reader. Looks like kind of like a mini USB or micro drive. The SIM card goes right into the end of it there. I’ll just give that to you.
AJ Vickery: I’m going to go put that in.
Lindsay Smith: Perfect.
AJ Vickery: Hold it steady.
Lindsay Smith: Yup, and it’s got a little symbol on the back of it so you can see which way to load the SIM card in so—
AJ Vickery: I think I’m doing it.
Lindsay Smith: Yeah, it’s almost full proof.
AJ Vickery: Okay, so I got it in.
Lindsay Smith: So, you just put that in there. So basically, once it’s plugged in there, the little green light goes on the top. So, it tells you that there is a connection. You should also have preloaded the software into your computer in advance like we’ve done here. And then the two of them speak together so that you can read and write to the SIM card.
AJ Vickery: Yeah, SIM card readers are probably little bit tricky to find. You’re not going to find them like in your local computer store and you don’t need to read your SIM card on your computer, but if you do want to get in there, you can actually change a bunch of things. We can actually just—when you get your new SIM card and your new mobile phone, simply just download all that to that device and you could easily update your phone book. But as we were saying, if you have a bunch of business cards and they’re in your Outlook or something like that and you want to basically merge that information onto the mobile phone, simply just take it into the software program and you start entering phone numbers pretty easy.
Lindsay Smith: I don’t know how many times, I’ve met so many people that have run into that situation where they’ve lost their cellphone and you know they’re completely out of luck in terms of losing all of their numbers and then they have to send out the emails to everyone saying “Please send me your contact information again.” So, this is a really great way to back those up. And I think it’s really important in a business case because I mean that’s your lifeline, you probably have a lot of business partners in there, potential sales and prospects and things like that. And you don’t want to lose that information.
AJ Vickery: Absolutely, so I just entered in my—and I’m going to put that in there on this phone and give me a call.
Lindsay Smith: That sounds good. Now, one thing to know before we finish up here is basically when you’re saving things to your cellphone or to your SIM card, there’s two different ways you can do it. You can save it directly to the phone or you can save it to the SIM card. The SIM card does have a lot less storage capacity on it than the phone. So, a lot of people tend to just default it to saving everything to your phone. So, if you do want to use or try out this process, you’re going to have to change the settings in your phone to save to the SIM card.
AJ Vickery: That’s true.
Lindsay Smith: Otherwise, you’re going to plug your SIM card and then you’re going to find out that there’s no numbers on there. And that’s not going to help you out.
AJ Vickery: There we go Mike.
Lindsay Smith: There you go. Hey Mike. Oh there he is. Hello!
