Tortoises from different islands can identified but the shape of their shells.

They appear to have evolved into main types with slide variations.

This one with a dome shaped shell and short neck is from Santa Cruz Island.

Other islands have species with higher saddled shaped shells and long necks.

This tortoise is from San Cristobel Island, and this one is from Hood.

Tortoises are pre-dominantly vegetarian. When there is no fresh water, they obtain moisture from juicy cactus stems, grass and other plants.

When water is available, tortoises consume large quantities and store it in their bodies.
