Everybody loves meatballs and spaghetti, but let’s face it. Meatballs can be pretty high in that unhealthy saturated fat. Now for this recipe, I’m going to make garden turkey meatballs. I use glean ground turkey or you can use say 90 percent lean ground beef and I’m going to add some surprising ingredients to make it even healthier. I’m Liz Weiss. Let’s go ahead and get started.
Alright, we’re going to add a few ingredients to our ground turkey. We got a pound of ground turkey. I’ve got oatmeal. You can use something like quick cooking oats or even old fashion oats and I use that instead of bread crumbs. A little bit healthier. I’ve got grated carrot. I finely grated about two to three carrots and we’re going to go ahead and add that. Great nutrition and nobody has to know it’s in there, and an egg, just a large egg. We’re getting there. Now this is one of favorite ingredients, grated Parmesan cheese. It’s all about flavor when you’re eating a healthy diet. Ok, so in goes the Parmesan. So good.
Alright, ground flaxseed, two tablespoons. Ground flaxseed contains heart healthy omega three fat. Again, instead of just adding old bread crumbs, we’ve got the oatmeal. We have a little bit of flaxseed just to give us some secret extra nutrition. A tablespoon of dried Italian seasoning, or you can use basil, and salt and pepper. We then mix it all together.
Alright you know good nutrition doesn’t count unless the food tastes good. And that’s what I love about these meatballs. They are so delicious. It makes good nutrition that much easier. So we’re all ready to go. We’re going to roll the meat mixture into one and a half inch balls, and then what we’ll do is we’ll bake them in the oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
Alright we’re almost done with our meatballs makeover. Meatballs are done and all we do now is place them into a sauce pan with a jar of pasta sauce. You can certainly make your own sauce from scratch. Or you could be like me and you could be a little bit lazy. So I’ve done this for you already and as you could see, our meatballs are in here simmering. They’re going to simmer for 20 minutes. And now we’re ready to plate it up.
