Whenever you see a globe, it should remind you always check the origins of your species before you do any planting. It will tell you the conditions that a plant likes.
This lavender here for instance comes originally from the Mediterranean, so it should tell you then that it needs hot, dry conditions for it to do really well. So find that particular spot in your garden.
Whenever you see anybody that is throwing away one of these, they have a loss there because they are throwing away not an old mop head but hundreds of plant ties, and they are amazingly strong. Also, they are the right length for most of your gardening tasks.
Now, if you stay in a lot of hotels around the country, you might find in the bathroom a shower cap. And if you cleverly take it everyday, put it in your drawer, they will put another one. What you want them for is to make propagator top to the greenhouses for your plant pots. Try to find an elastic band and a freezer bag.
Now, maybe it is present time. It could be someone’s birthday. Maybe grandma has a special birthday and the kids want to give her something that she will remember. Old flower pot? No, but coupled with a couple of tubes of acrylic paint and a kid’s imagination, they have soon created a masterpiece. Look at that! A great pot that grandma will never forget.
Now cutting, you should take as many cuttings as you can. Maybe you are visiting a friend’s or a relative’s garden, and you salivate at some of the plants they have around them. You think, “I would love some of those myself”.
Well, you can have them. Just ask permission and take a cutting. And every self-respecting garden, they should have a cutting kit, a damp tissue, a piece of elastic band or string, a knife, and a freezer bag. This is how it goes.
You find the plant you want to take the cutting from. You cleverly take it in the right place, take off the lower leaves, take your damp tissue, wrap the end of the stem in the tissue. Keep it nice and moist. Pop it in the bag and with the string—or in this case, the elastic band, you wrap the top up, keep it nice and safe, and that will be great until you get back home to the greenhouse and you can pot it up properly.
Now, labeling the garden. You should label everything in the garden because you want to make sure those labels stay vivid so you can see what you planted when you planted a variety that you have chosen.
So, you label it well with a permanent market. That marker is not going to be permanent, I can promise you. The sun will very soon fade the ink on there. The way to avoid any fading is to simply use some ordinary nail polish. A little sweep of nail polish across the ink, and I could promise you, that ink is not going to fade one bit.
And finally, never go anywhere in your garden without your trusting pair of scissors. Keep them sharp, keep them at hand, and they will help you with many garden tasks. Including of course, pruning your roses.
