Welcome to Common Man Cocktails, I’m Derrick Schommer, and today we’ll going to teach you how to make the scorpion or a scorpion. It’s cool, it’s got a ton of ingredients, let’s get ready with some of the weird items we’ll going to need. We’re going to need the teaspoon, we’re going to need a measure tablespoon, this is probably one of the more complex drinks we’ve done; lime squeeze, lemon squeeze, in this case for lemons, little mint for garnish, what else do we got? And we’re going to need our orange juice, dark rum, dry or extra dry vermouth, if you have extra dry it seems to work fine, we got brandy, in this case Christian’s Brothers Brandy not necessarily the best but this one is what I have in the house, and Orgeat syrup, you could buy this at store, it’s got no alcohol, it’s an almond syrup, you could usually get it in the coffee section of the store, online you can get it anywhere. And all these ingredients, they will come together to make the scorpion, so let’s bring them all together and make a scorpion.
We’re going to need two ounces of dark rum, this is a primary ingredient, really it’s the only alcohol in here besides a little bit of brandy, so pour in our two ounces. O course if you don’t like rum, it might not be the drink for you. Where’s my cap, here we go. Smells kind of like Captain Morgan, but not as spicy, I love Captain Morgan. Let’s do 1 tablespoon of brandy, so it’s not really a lot of brandy, just enough to flavor it, give out a relaxing taste, little sweet maybe. We’re going to do one tablespoon of dried vermouth, if you’re a martini drinker, you’ve probably have seen vermouth, not too much vermouth as it will kill your drink instantly. We need two tablespoons of orange juice. We’re going to do one of this little teaspoon guys of this Orgeat syrup, it’s like a sugarcane, it’s very, very sweet, so you don’t need too much. Of course if you like sweet drinks you could put a little extra, I stick with recipes as, as how they were designed, somebody smarter than me came out with them. Last ingredient, this is where the trick comes in, I want to squeeze it, can’t really squeeze it into a tablespoon to well, so what we’ll do is, we’ll going to attempt to a miracle of science, we’re going to try and squeeze the lime, the lemon into this little glass, this little one ounce space, and a half will get you about one half ounce, a whole will get you a whole ounce.
So we’ll be going to need two tablespoons. Convenient, looks like I could just squeeze it in right in there. You learn something new every day. And last but not least, we’ll going to shake it up, pour that sucker right in, be cool and garnish with a little sprig of mint, kind of give it the minty taste, get it down soak it up a little bit in the natural fluids. Let’s give this a try. Now this is a strange Polynesian drink. Don’t confuse this with the scorpion bowl, completely different animals, scorpion bowls--you’re usually go to those American-Chinese restaurants, where you got a big bowl couple of straws, everybody has a good time, you can’t really drive home, not the same thing, that usually have 100 or something proof of alcohol, usually dark rums, light rums, gins, it’s just a mix of alcohol. This is a little more poly, not more Polynesian, but more tasty, it’s not all about the alcohol. It has tons of flavors, it’s like a pineappley taste, even though there’s really no pineapple in here, it’s probably the way, the nutty Orgeat syrup work with the orange juice and all the different crazy mixtures you got in here. It is a little sour, the sourness that you’ll taste in the drink is the lemon coming thru the natural lemon, it’s going to be different depending to how ripe the lemon is, how new, how young it is, sometimes they’re a little sour beginning in the end. If you get them right in the middle, they’re pretty good, you could also use fake lemon, but it’s just not the same in my opinion, you want to use something that is well balanced with sweet and sours.
Overall, I would say it’s a good drink, I don’t know if I could drink more than one, it is kind of potent, but it does blast your senses with all kinds of neat taste, so I definitely recommend, you give it a try, and experience it for yourself. So that’s how you make a scorpion.
