Gastric Flu Causes

David: Hi! My name is David from Los Angeles, California, and I wanted to know what causes gastric flu and what we can do to prevent it. Dr. David Rubin: Well David, the gastric flu is a viral infection of the stomach or intestine that causes vomiting and often diarrhea. It's an infection that spread rapidly among in close populations like nursing homes or cruise ships. And the way to avoid it is when you are in those situations to make sure that you are using extra sanitary conditions, washing your hands before you eat and making sure that the environments where you are exposed to other individuals including the rest rooms are as clean as possible. There are vaccines for certain types of viruses in the GI tract like Rotavirus, but those are more commonly used in children.
